Show Education and for teacher certification, the student should consult with one of the professors of secondary education. It is recommended that the student complete the 33 credit hours required for certification, in the following sequence: Education 111, 101, 105, 161, 146, 157, 112, 102. The academic teaching major and teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 42 and 20 quarter hours respectively. These major and minor requirements are described in the catalog under the departments offering them. The teaching major and minor must be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk satisfy this second requirement—see below). The composite major does not require an accompanying minor. The following are composite majors with their requirements: BIOLOGY COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR The biology composite teaching major must complete a minimum of 62 quarter hours in the life sciences in addition to the requirements in the physical sciences, state certification and graduation requirements. The required courses have been selected to give the student a broad background in the biological disciplines as well as 250 Education minimal training in the physical sciences. The courses required for the Biology Composite Teaching Major are: Botany 1, 2; Microbiology 1; Zoology 4, 7, 20, 30, 180, 181; Botany 141 or 145 or Zoology 140 or 145; Botany 120 or Zoology 101 or 121; 2 hours of seminar selected from the Botany, Microbiology or Zoology Departments; Chemistry 11,12, 13 or 24, 25, 26; Geology 21; Physics 5; and Mathematics 14 or 18. Substitution of equivalent credits or deviations from the above requirements must be approved by the advisor. The student should select a sufficient number of electives in the life sciences to establish an area of major concentration of 22 hours and two areas of minor concentration of 20 hours each. Electives should be selected from among the following: Botany 60, 80, 100, 110, 134, 150, 161, 162, 163, 180, 185, 189; Microbiology 120, 160; Zoology 105, 110, 130, 132, 142, 147, 148, 150, 160, 163, 164, 165, 166, 167, 168, 170, 174, 175; Geology 22; Chemistry 51, 107, 131, 132, 133; and Mathematics 21. BUSINESS EDUCATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR A student selecting this must have a major emphasis of at least 24 hours from the courses required in the major and emphasis in two complementary minors of at least 18 hours each, from the courses required in the minors. The following fields are acceptable for the composite teaching major in business education: Accounting, Economics, and Office Administration. MUSIC EDUCATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR The Music Education Composite Teaching Major is recommended for prospective secondary school music educators and consists of a minimum of 80 quarter hours in four areas as listed below. Requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. Music Theory (28 hours): Music 70, 71, 72, 76, 77, 78, 176, 177, 178, 179, 180. Music History and Literature (18 hours): Music 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112. Music Applied (Select 17 hours applicable to the major): Music 40, 41, 43, 44, 46, 50, 60, 66, 68, 140, 141, 143, 144, 146, 150, 160, 166, 168. Music Education (17 hours): Music 20, 24, 25a, 25b, 26a, 26b, 27a, 27b, 28, 125, 130. 251 |
