Show Education 21. Elementary Clothing Construction—A service course for those with little or no sewing experience. Time-saving principles of clothing construction applied to several simply designed articles. Open to all women, not required of majors. A W (3) Wise 22. Advanced Clothing Construction—Application of principles involved in construction of suits and coats. Not required of majors. Prerequisite: FL 25 S (3) Wise 23. Family Clothing—Factors influencing clothing as it relates to family needs, interests, and problems. Physiological, psychological, artistic, social, and economic aspects of clothing considered. AWS (3) Mumford, Wise 24. Family Textiles—Fiber, yarns, and finishes as they relate to buying, wear, use, care, and laundering of household fabrics. A W S (3) Mumford 25. Pattern Design and Dress Construction—Principles of clothing construction with emphasis on flat pattern design, alteration of commercial patterns, and personal fitting problems applied to a dress. Open to all women, required of majors. Prerequisite: FL 21 or equivalent. A W S (3) Wise Child Development and Family Relations 31. Family Health and Infant Care—Understanding of mother and infant care with experience in handling the baby and developing simple nursing techniques in the family situations. A (2) Staff 33. Marriage and Family Living—Appreciation for enriched family life; attitudes and relationships in marriage; personality, self-understanding, courtship, responsibilities and adjustments for successful marriage. Appropriate for men and women. AWS (3) Lehner 35. Child Development—Self-understanding and appreciation of insight and skills basic to effective human relationships with the family; a study of behavior from infancy through adolescence. Directed observations in the Child Development Laboratory. Appropriate for men and women. AWS (5) Lehner, Tribe 36. Guidance of the Young Child—Living application of observations and theory in Family Life 35 to promote an increased understanding of one's self and develop understanding and skill in working with children. Child Development Laboratory—Enrollment for a child in the Nursery School and concurrent enrollment in Family Life 38. A W S Staff 38. Education for Parents of the Pre-School Child—Prerequisite: Enrollment of a child in the Nursery School. The physical, social and emotional development of the growing child. AWS (1-2 Credit may be arranged) Staff 40. Play and Creative Materials in Childhood—Use of creative materials in enriching a child's life; meaning of play and its value in meeting needs of the child. W S (3) Prerequisite FL 35 Bishop 42. The Child from Six to Twelve—Growth and development of the normal child from six to twelve years. Guidance principles implicit in the normal behavior of children at these age levels. Laboratory experience and observation. Prerequisite: FL 35. Appropriate for men and women. S (3) Staff 100. Family Relationships—Interpersonal relationships in the family; their significance in developing values, goals, attitudes, and patterns of behavior through the various stages of the family life cycle. Appropriate to men and women. Prerequisite: Family Life 33 or 35; or Psychology 100. A W S (3) Wise 101. Growth of the Infant—Child development from conception to fifteen months with discussion of infant care. Prerequisite: Family Life 35. Appropriate for men and women. W (3) Staff 103. The Family in the Middle and Later Years—Family development, and problems of grown children and their parents; parents on their own; understanding older family members. Appropriate for men and women. Organization and Planning for Pre-School Programs- Consideration of factors involved in the development of preschool programs including housing equipment, health protection, food service, etc. W (3) Staff 108. Nursery School Methods—Methods and techniques of guidance of pre-school children individually and in groups, with emphasis on the study of one child. Readings in research on preschool children. To be taken concurrently with FL 109. W S (3) Bishop 109. Practice Teaching in the Nursery School—Experience in application of generalizations regarding growth, guidance, and development of children in the nursery school. For Juniors and Seniors who have had a substantial amount of professional course work. Arrangements must be made for practice teaching well in advance of registration.
