Hirst, M.D., Richard Iverson, M.D. The Department includes Health Education, Required Physical Education and Intramurals for Men, Required Physical Education and Intramurals for Women, Professional Physical Education, Recreation Education, and Intercollegiate Athletics. The Director of Athletics is responsible to the President of the College; the Chairman of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is responsible to the Dean of the School of Education. The College Health Service program is administered by the Department. Required Physical Education - three quarters of approved physical education activity courses. One approved activity course must be taken during the Autumn quarter. During this quarter the physical education testing program and the introduction to the values of physical education will be given. Men may satisfy the requirement by taking any physical activity courses numbered 1 through 29; 31, 32, 33, 34, 36, 48; 60 through 69. Women may satisfy the requirement by taking any physical education activity courses numbered 1 through 29; 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 48. Medical recommendation approved by the College Physician is the only acceptable excuse to waive this requirement. Health Education - Health Education 1 is required for graduation of all students except as provided in special curricula. 260 Education BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Official acceptance as a candidate for a Physical Education major will be determined at the beginning of the junior year upon demonstration of satisfactory character and academic achievement. Foundation courses required for Physical Education majors and recommended for minors in Physical Education, Health Education and Recreation are: Physiology 1, Psychology 1, Health Education 3, Family Life 6, Speech 1, Library Science 40, Chemistry 5 and Physics 5. Also nine hours of Physical Education activities in six different activities; i.e., swimming, dancing, gymnastics, weight training, individual sports and team sports. Physical Education Major - Forty-five hours of approved courses including the following: 10 hours, Techniques and Materials (including P.E. 105), P.E. 83, 85, 150, 151, 154, 160, 161, 162, 190, Health Education 105, 110. Emphasis in Health Education, Recreation Education, Physical Therapy, Dance or Coaching is permitted with the consent of the department. The courses of emphasis are recommended primarily in the area of materials and techniques of the specialized fields. Physical Education Teaching Major and Teaching Minor - same requirements as for the departmental major or minor plus professional education requirements for the secondary school teacher certificate. Minors will be offered in Physical Education, Health, Education, and Recreation Education by fulfilling 25 hours of approved courses as follows: Physical Education Minor - Twenty-five hours of approved courses including P.E. 83, 161, 162, and 8 hours of Techniques and Materials. Physical Education Minor with Dance Emphasis - Twenty- five hours of approved courses including P.E. 31, 37, 39, 40, 83, 85, 105, 109, 114, 111, 142, 161. Health Education Minor - Twenty-five hours of approved courses including: P.E. 3, 150, 110, 112, Psychology 140, and Bacteriology 5. Recreation Education Minor - Twenty-five hours of approved courses including: 6 hours of recreation activities, R.E. 80, 88, 160, 155, Physical Education 31, 83, 105, 107, 108, 157.
