Show 7 THURSDAY Farewell to Rogers, Post Thousands Walk Past Casket of Humorist at California Funeral 12,000 Theaters Darken Rupert Hughes, Conrad Nagel and Minister Speak at Last Rites Aug 23 1935 By Associated Press Millions of Americans bowed heads Thursday in silent farewell to Will Rogers, whose homespun humor made them laugh, and to Wiley Post, whose daring flying made them cheer. The hour of last rites for Rogers at Glendale, Cal., and for Post at Oklahoma City was marked by impressive observances throughout the United States. Mute thousands walked slowly past the simple bronze casket of Rogers in Forest Lawn memorial park, Glendale, from sunrise until the funeral hour. Then they retired respectfully, leaving the bereaved family of the cowboy actor philosopher alone with their dead at the church of the Wee Kirk o the Heather. Will Rogers Life Story Instalment 2 Herewith is the second instalment in The Life of Will Rogers, appearing exclusively in The Tribune. It is one of the most fascinating portrayals of the great humorist, written by Charles Collins, dramatic critic of the Chicago Tribune, and for years a personal friend. You will not want to miss a single instalment of this absorbing story. By CHARLES COLLINS (Copyright, by the Chicago Tribune Syndicate) The manager of the theater came running backstage after Will Rogers, the cowboy amateur, had spoken his first words across the footlights, and said: One laugh like that is worth a dozen rope tricks. Can you give us more chatter like that in the next show? Rogers guessed he could; he went back up to his dressing room to read a newspaper and scrawl a few notes for comic remarks they were called nifties, not wisecracks, in the theatrical slang of 1905 on the back of an old envelope. In the next performance he produced five laughs instead of two and one of them was accidental. He addressed the audience seriously, but it laughed at him, and Will felt annoyed and embarrassed. Ladies and gentlemen, he said, I want to call your sho nuff attention to this next stunt. I'm going to throw these two ropes at once, catching the horse with one and the rider with the other. I dont have no idea that I'll make it, but here goes.WARNERS CALENDAR OF MEDICAL HISTORY |
