It is located adjoining the General Infirmary which dates back to 1767. 8 FRIDAY MARCH President Grant Will Be Speaker At Watson Rites Business Men, Church and Civic Officials to Take Part in Services OGDEN John Watson, one of the most prominent men in the history of Ogden educator, church official, businessman, financier, former city Official and philanthropist who died Friday after a short illness, will be buried in Ogden City cemetery Monday following funeral services in the Ogden L. D. S. tabernacle, which will be attended by state and local leaders. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. by Bishop Austin H. Shaw of the Ogden Fifth ward. John Watson was one of the most active and best loved men in the community. Identified with nearly every forward looking step in the later history of Ogden and Weber county. Mr. Watson also was a member of the state equalization board fourteen years. Prominent in Business He has been closely associated with many businesses in Utah, including Z.C.M.I.; First National bank of Ogden; stockholder, director or officer 18 different banks; the Eccles company; Watson Tanner Clothing company, Watson Flygare Hardware company, several packing companies, the Ririe and Watson fruitfarm Amalgamated Sugar company and others. Mr. Watson was a former member of the presidency of the old Weber L.D.S. stake and also held numerous other church positions. He was a member of the board of education of the school now Weber college. He also served on the school board of Ogden City. He put the motion, That we make the schools of Ogden City public and free. In a life of varied activity he also served in official capacities with the state industrial school, the state school for the deaf and blind and the Thomas D. Dee Memorial hospital as a member of the Ogden City council, and at the time of his death was the oldest in point of ordination, of the high priests quorum of the Mt. Ogden stake. Speakers Announced Speakers at his funeral Monday Will include President Heber J. Grant of the L. D. S. church; M. A. Tanner, president of the Weber L. D. S. stake; Alva L. Scoville, Dr. Edward I. Rich, Bishop Shaw and the Rev. Dr. John Edward Carver. The invocation will be offered by W. H. Reeder, president of the Mt. Ogden L. D. S. stake, and Joseph Ririe, his counselor and present state treasurer, will pronounce the benediction. Arthur Halverson will dedicate the grave. Mrs. Mary Farley will sing, Oh, Ye Mountains High, a number specially requested by Mr. Watson prior to his death. Other musical numbers will be sung by Mrs. Royal Eccles, Mrs. Fred Froerer, Mrs. Darrell J. Greertwell, Mrs. Berniece Tyree and George Manning. The funeral cortege will leave the family home, 2556 Madison avenue, at 1:30 p. m. Members of the quorum of high priests of the Mt. Ogden L. D. S. stake will attend the funeral in a body. The Ogden L. D. S. Fifth ward Relief society members will care for floral offerings. Grandsons Pallbearers Pallbearers will be six grandsons of Mr. Watson: Alton and Milo Halverson, Jack, Wayne, Ralph and John S. Watson. Honorary pallbearers include members of the presidencies of the four L. D. S. stakes of Weber county, Postmaster R. B. Porter, former Mayor Frank Francis, Superintendent F. M. Driggs of the state school for the deaf and blind, S. T. Jeppesen and George S. Eccles of the First National bank, now a First Security bank branch; Fred E. Williams mayor pro tem, and Commissioner George OConnor of Ogden City. Burial will be under direction of the Larkin & Sons mortuary. |
