There has been considerable discussion resulting from the expulsion of an 8 year old boy from a Massachusetts school because he refused to salute the American flag. The action of the school authorities was more childish than the conduct of the lad. There is no justification for banishing a pupil from an influence he apparently needs. Nor is there any justification in trying to force a child to be either polite or patriotic. Such decencies should be taught, not imposed. Dismissal was a confession of incompetency and an exhibition of ill nature on the part of the board of trustees. The only persons whose patriotism is open to question in this matter are those who applaud the boys peculiar attitude. Some of them should know better even though small children may not. One of the valiant defenders of the little fellows insubordination is Judge Rutherford, who has made radio talks and published articles declaring that the American flag, not being a religious emblem, need not be saluted or respected by man, woman or child. The flag of the United States is not the flag of Jehovah God and Christ Jesus; it is the emblem of national power and no one can say that God and Christ Jesus rule a government where crime is rampant. He overlooks recorded facts showing that crime was rampant in the good old days when there was no recognized government but that of Jehovah, upon whose direct counsel and advice Jacob and Jehu, Joshua and Joab, David and Abijah and scores of kings with banners and devices, with blood on their escutcheons and vengeance in their hearts, conducted the public affairs of ancient times. Crime has been rampant from the earliest era of recorded time, wherefore civil governments have been organized to preserve order, maintain peace, protect personal rights and enforce obedience to mandates based on the cumulative and combined wisdom of representative lawgivers and acknowledged leaders. It would take columns of newspaper space to recapitulate the crimes recorded in the testament on which Judge Rutherford relies. Yet he lauds a contumacious act which, by natural growth and such encouragement, is bound to develop into disrespect for law, disregard for courts, disobedience to authority and anarchistic defiance of government. Lenins command to apostles of communism was this: Destroy the ideology of the individual. There are three methods by which this may be accomplished: 1. By inciting in children contempt for the flag of their country. 2. By baiting bigots until they make religion appear unpatriotic and eventually unpopular. 3. By fomenting discord between the church and state. The Nichols lad, declares the learned judge, who once served a term in the national house of representatives, has been taught by his parents to serve and obey Jehovah and he has made a wise choice in refusing to honor the flag of his country. Real American citizens, he says, who love the principles of the bill of rights and the fundamental law of the land, who believe in freedom of thought and freedom of speech and, above all, in the right to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience, will commend the lad. Why? Old Glory stands for all those ideals and guaranties. The flag represents the only land in which such principles are embodied in a fundamental law. The Stars and Stripes may mean nothing to the immature mind of an undeveloped second grade youngster of New England; evidently they mean less to the judge, who mouths with evident relish a recital of rights won by disciplined and patriotic founders of free government who marched and fought beneath the flag he flouts. The child must be enrolled as a fighter for communism; he must be disillusioned of respect for parents and adults; he must be taught to revile the flag and resist authority; who controls the youth controls the future of the world; eventually the red flag will become their flag. So says the soviet manual for leaders of childrens groups. Applause from Judge Rutherford seems to be in order. All the agents of Moscow and all the seditious documents propagandists may print and circulate in America will not yield such a harvest to communism as might the pious polemics of a bigot who prays that children may spit upon or spurn the flag of their country.
