Willis Oborn Harvey......Gerald Welker Ben Staggs......Dan Bailey Mrs. Harkness .... Virginia Allen according to law The pernicious lynching of negroes in the South has received a great deal of criticism during the past few years. The conditions which allow this and other undemocratic infringements of the law to go unpunished is portrayed in masterful fashion by Noel Houston in his play "According to Law" . . . John Piers, in the role of Henry Terry, a district judge, gave an excellent portrayal of an apple-nibbling, tobacco-spitting corrupted judge of the district court. Bob McGregor, Eddie Dayhuff, Vernal Jenson, Willis Obern and Gerald Welker presented in convincing style the attitudes of court officials who were in league with the judge to end the session of court as quickly as possible, while still obtaining a confession from the negro, and obtaining it by any means necessary. Clenton Price gave his audience an excellent example of a prejudiced senator who turned the tables in favor of the guilty party. Dan Bailey was the disillusioned and drunken lawyer who had been the most brilliant of his graduating class, a lawyer who defended to the best of his ability the trembling negro. Virginia Allen, whom the negro, Johnny Eccles, was accused of attacking, used her wiles to the detriment of justice and the appreciative eye of court officials. The versatility and liveliness of the show is no longer questioned when one considers the creators of the patented, copyrighted, and Hollywood-demanded production-Dan Bailey, author; and Estelle Kelleher, song writer . . . The Varsity Show, which was presented on May 15 and 16, will undoubtedly live forever in the minds of those who saw it, and will doubtlessly be remembered by future generations as something that can be done by only the chosen few. |
