Show FRIDAY, HIGHLANDER School Spirit?—It’s Everyone's Job New Courses, Old Teaching Methods A great deal of progress has taken place at Ben Lomond with all of the new and specialized courses being offered this year. These courses give a definite advantage to students. A student is much more apt to learn something of value in a course he is interested in than in a required course which he is completely bored with, or in a class which de does poorly in. When a student is forced to learn, he generaly develops a negative attitude—especially if he doesn’t like the subject to begin with. However, since such a variety of courses have been offered this year, the majority of our student body should really be learning a lot and loving every minute of it—right? Wrong. Unfortunately, although the courses are new and have variety, the teaching methods are not. In most classes the same routine prevails, namely: the student reads a text book, answers questions (or some type of homework), hears a lecture, and periodically takes a test. The comprehensive learning resulting from this type of teaching amounts to very little. Most students learn enough to pass the test and receive a satisfactory grade, then they forget a great deal of what they supposedly should know. Many schools in other states do not offer half of the curriculum that Ben Lomond does, but what is the value in offering extra courses if we don’t utilize the advantage of having special education? It seems the burden is upon the teachers to try and make learning more enjoyable for th student, provide interesting information, and vary his teaching methods. A student can gain a great deal from discussions with his classmates and from outside sources other than the teacher and the textbook. Our culture offers too much that applies to our education to be ignored. However, the student must also demonstrate a desire to learn and show his enthusiasm about new methods and concepts. He must care enough do more than is required. ” iS ie . about his education Editor's Note The following Letters to the Editor are not necessarily the opinion of the newspaper staff. Dear Editor: I think Ben Lomond Scots have lots of school spirit, because even though it was snowing and raining and exceptionally cold, many Scots came out to the Iron Horse game and supported the team. Signed, A Loyal Scot Dear Editor: The sophomores were really iuvolved during Iron Horse Week. The officers had a very short time to get things organized. Many students spent their time working hard to compete | with the Seniors and Why, after all this hard work, did inconsiderate students besides Sophomores have to tear down the decorations? You didn‘t see Sophomores tearing down the Seniors’ and Juniors’ halls. Maybe Seniors and Juniors aren’t so perfect. They need RESPECT! Sophomores might be the only ones to teach them. How about it, Seniors and Juniors? Do you set the example, or do we? Signed, A Sophomore Dear Editor: Because I am a sophomore, I really didn’t know what to expect from high school. But if the performance at halftime by the band, Heatherettes and Bonnie Lassies is a | sample of the spirit here at Ben Lomond, I’m awfully glad that I’m going here. Signed, Ima _ Softmoor TOUCHDOWN! Dear Several students’ conduct at our football games is just downright disgusting. Although it is quite far from being a majority, there are some students who feel that when ‘they are attending a ball game ‘that it is necessary for them to impress other people. These people try to impress anyone any way they can, whether it be by smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages at the game, using foul language, just plain bothering people, or if they have someone they really want to impress they will try to pick a fight with someone from the other school. Scottie Dear Editor: I would like to say how pleased I was during Iron Horse Week. : The school had a lot of school spirit and activity. Having the halls and doors decorated added ‘to the meaning of that week. I would like to congratulate our team on the great game they played. Let’s all remember this game and continue to have the enthusiasm and school spirit we had at this game. I’m _ sure it will help our school and team. Thank you, Lesley_Alford Whoever first stated that religion was definitely one topic that could not be discussed without argument really knew his facts. It’s IMPOSSIBLE!!! When the group involved in the discussion is of the same religion. the argument concerns different translations of the doctrines of the church. Another argument might stem from the issue of symbolism in the Bible. If the group includes members of various denominations, everyone is at each other’s throat. “Your religion is wrong. You guys will never make it into heaven!” “How can the church say that? Not even God would back your religion up!” “I can’t explain why, because I’m not that up on it, but I know that’s not the way God mean it!” Sound familiar? nne! Editor: I’m proud to be a Scot, I wonder if they are. Juniors. By ANN KRAFT Have you ever known anyone who advocates peace, brotherhood and love whose very name ignites the flame of argument in everyone? Do you know God? Let’s get it all together, people! One man or one church cannot say that another man or his church worships incorrectly. We are instructed to be humble and sincere. Worship the way you feel it is right for you to worship and respect your fellow man : Often our whole school is judged according to this small group of students and their rotten behavior. | The hall showed that the class | of "74 has a lot of school spirit to give Ben Lomond. LET THERE BE LOVE Why must we take it as a personal insult when others believe differently than‘ we do? We're all agreed that we believe in the same and only God. We agree that He is the answer to many of the problems faced by the world today. We all agree that God is love. Then, WHY do we fight while discussing a God who advocates love? to bined effort and a lot of trial and error. e people involved in education, will Dear Student Body: I often hear kids complaining that no one will listen to them. They say they have no one to talk to or through. They’re wrong. All they have to do is to write a- Letter to the Editor. Got something you want to talk about, and you think that the whole student body should hear it? Please, write a Letter to the Editor. Thank you, Ken Alford. Lately, if you’ve been listening carefully, you have probably heard a great deal of talk circulating that there isn’t any school spirit left here at Ben Lomond. Agreed, we do have a good number of problems in the area of school spirit which we should be working on, but I’m sure that the members of the student body who attended the Iron Horse game on Oct. 1 know just how much school spirit we really have. To have the kind of student, faculty, and parent turnout that we had on a rainy, snowy, muddy day as that Friday was, is just tremendous. Keep an eye open and notice who is usually talking about the poor spirit here at BL. Most often it is students who skip out on assemblies, don’t go to any sports activities, etc. The next time that you hear people talking about the lack of school spirit, just ask them what they’ve done to help with school spirit. Remember: It is up to everyone to decide what type of school we will have. What kind do you want? OCTOBER $29.95 You You don’t have to be rich Sere 3675 Wall ert ee ats qa - |
