KRAFT By now it is common knowledge that Ben Lomond has a new principal, but few of the students have talked with him enough to know what he is really like. In this article, assuming you read it, you will see the lighter side of Mr. Carruth, the new man in the top office. You will also see the more serious side and the usual factual side of him, Dr. Carruth went to Weber State College on an _ athletic es scholarship. RUSSELL W. CARRUTH DR. . . - Meet our new Principal Dr. Carruth LIONEL G, DRECHSEL Accepts Board appointment Likes Scots’ Motto The “Friendly, Fighting Scots!” There is no question about this motto being one that, as Shakespeare suggested, is spoken “‘trippingly off the tongue.” As a matter of fact, it comes so easily that one is inclined to wonder about how much thought is given to the apparent antithesis of the two characteristics. Friendliness and fighting are not usually thought of in a common context. This, however, is the key to what gives Ben Lomond High School students their uniqueness. It is not easy to be kindly disposed without any hostility toward opponents with whom you are committed to vigorously struggle — sometimes physically, as in a football game or wrestling match — for victory. Ordinarily, the kindly disposition is lost in the struggle and the opponent, at least for the moment, is the enemy upon whom any or all wrath is justified. This is not so with the students at Ben Lomond who seriously develop both of these characteristics in their lives. being a junior high “ ss Fort assist- ant principal, he went to Harvard on an academic scholarship. From there, he became a district office worker and has been there for about 14 years. When asked if he had any animals at his house, Dr. C. replied, ‘‘No, just one 12-year-old.” His child is going to kill him if this paper gets in the wrong hands! ; Dr. Carruth believes that morals apply not only to sex, but to our attitude to others in general, He says that all men deserve respect simply because they are human beings. If you ever get a free period (legally) go on in and talk with the man. We have had many es great activities under him and appreciate him very much. He has been a very understanding man who has been able to listen to our problems concerning — our officers and the problems concerning the school. We, as officers, have not always agreed with the decisions that he has made, but have always found that the reason that he didn’t allow the activity or function to go on was for our own good, seeing as he had the wisdom to look ahead, see what the board would feel about the function, and save our necks from the chopping block. Although Dr. “D” is a great man and we will miss working with him the rest of the year, we feel that we have been given an equally great man whose name is Dr. Carruth, We feel ‘that you, Th ae ee New buildings have been added (swimming pool, athletic field, Media Center and _ dressing rooms in the gym). About 75 per cent of the classes are different than eleven years ago. Many activities have been changed or added at the school (musical, Mexican Clan, Black Clan, sophomore baseball, swimming). Wrestling has grown from 6-15 boys participating to 50-60 boys. Dance Clan has grown from 15-40 students using onehalf of the gym to 300-400 students. I am pleased to be associated with students who set such lofty goals for themselves and desire to become a party to their achievement. Dr. Russell W. The great desire to be a winner, to make a significant achievement and to enjoy success is a demanding taskmaster. Scots should know that and be willing to pay the price. To do it with dignity and honor is equally important and demanding. But only when these are put in proper balance in the life of every Scot will the student body honestly earn the title of “Friendly, Fighting Scots.” Thank to wh He also went to the University of Utah with funds provided by the G.I.
