Show Services of the College In addition, aptitude, interest, personality, and achievement tests are available for the purpose of helping students select their major and deal with other personal concerns relevant to college adjustment. An adult student who has not graduated from high school is required to take the General Educational Development Tests of the United States Armed Forces Institute prior to admission. These tests are available at the Weber State College Counseling and Testing Center. Academic Advisement—At the time of admission to Weber State College, every student is assigned to a faculty adviser in his major field, in General Education, or in Guided Studies. An appointment for each student is scheduled with his adviser at least once each quarter to help him with his registration schedule and to guide him towards a degree of his choice or towards the Certificate Program. When a student is placed in Guided Studies or on academic warning or probation, he is assigned a counselor in the Counseling and Testing Center. A student may seek assistance from his adviser or counselor with any educational or personal problem at any time. For information concerning Academic Advisement, inquire at the Office of Advisement, Room 129, in the Administration Building. Remedial Courses—In addition to its orientation activities, the college offers special remedial courses in English, mathematics, reading, and listening. The student who feels that he is weak in any of these areas and would like extra help should register for these courses. He should tell his advisor of this need during registration. The advisor will then help him select appropriate courses. VETERANS' SERVICE Veteran Coordinator—The Office of the Veteran Coordinator assists veterans with special problems involved in registering and training under the Public Laws which provide educational benefits. At this office the veterans may receive guidance and counseling related to the educational opportunities afforded them by the Public Laws and by the offerings of Weber State College. It is necessary that all veterans who attend Weber State College under one of the Public Laws clear through the office of the Veteran Coordinator. MILITARY SERVICE OBLIGATION AND COLLEGE DEFERMENTS All male citizens are required to register with their draft board within five days after they become eighteen years of age. 64 Services of the College They will then be mailed a registration or selective number. At eighteen and a half years they are mailed a form which they are required to fill out and return. They are subsequently given a classification. ROTC Programs—The College offers Army and Air Force ROTC programs. (See Department of Aerospace Studies, School of Arts, Letters, and Science, for further information.) Reserve Programs—Students may prefer to meet their obligation by joining a reserve or national guard unit. Direct contact should be made with the unit in which the student is interested. College Deferment—A student may be deferred under a II-S classification if he is pursuing a full-time course of instruction and makes proportional progress toward his degree each year. If a student is interested in a college deferment, he should contact his draft board within five days after his eighteenth birthday, and arrange to supply evidence of his registration at the college to the board. Extending one's education before he performs his military duty not only improves his capacity to serve his country, but also increases his chances for advancement during his service time. FOREIGN STUDENT ADVISEMENT All students from outside the United States are considered Foreign Students. Special on-campus advisement is provided for such students. At the beginning of each quarter Foreign Students are required to register with the Foreign Student Adviser. It is also necessary for them to keep him informed concerning such matters as local address, change of address, change of student status, etc. Requests for permission for employment, immigration certification, extensions of visa, money exchange letters, and transfer of schools, must be submitted through the Foreign Student Office. Assistance is also offered with personal and academic matters through all of the other Student Personnel departments. Foreign Students are urged to consult frequently with their adviser and to keep him informed on their problems and special needs. The Foreign Student Office is located in Annex I, Room 110, ext. 365.
