Teaching Minor in Business Education—A teaching minor in business education is available in the area of typewriting with accounting, business machines, or shorthand as the other area of emphasis with not less than 24 credit hours. See minor advisor for exact course listings. Office Administration-Family Life Combination Major—See description under Department of Family Life, page 237, and departmental advisors. Courses of Instruction 1. Personal Elementary Typewriting—Development of sustained typing power, control of figures and symbols, improvement of techniques. A speed of at least 30 words per minute should be attained. May be waived by proficiency examination. Credit will not be given to students who have had one year of typing previously. A W S (3) Staff 2. Elementary Typewriting—Continuation of Office Administration 1. Review of keyboard, business letters, tabulated reports, improvement of basic skills, and intensive speed building. For those typing 25 words per minute or faster. Prerequisite: Office Administration 1 or equivalent. A W S (3) Staff 3. Intermediate Typewriting—Manuscripts, special problems in letter arrangement and business forms. Prerequisite: Office Administration 2 or at least 40 words per minute. A W S (3) Staff 10. Hy-Speed Longhand (ABC Shorthand)—A method of fast writing based on the English alphabet; abbreviations, omission, and blending of letters; dictation and transcription. Prerequisite: Office Administration 2 or equivalent. This class continues into Office Administration 12. A W S (3) Henrie 11. Elementary Shorthand—Introduction to theory of Gregg Shorthand system with emphasis upon reading and writing fluency. Not open for credit to students who have had six months of previous shorthand training. Prerequisite: Office Administration 1 or equivalent, or take concurrently. A W S (4) Henrie, Jarrett 12. Elementary Shorthand—Continuation of Office Administration 11. Use of the entire shorthand theory in practice dictation. An entrance speed of at least 50 words per minute is required. Not open for credit to students who have completed two years of shorthand. Prerequisites: Office Administration 2 and 11 or equivalent. A W S (4) Henrie, Jarrett 214 Business and Economics 13. Intermediate Shorthand Dictation—Stenographic short-cuts, abbreviations, phrases and transcription. An entrance speed of at least 70 words per minute is required. Business Machines—Practical experience using rotary calculators and ten-key printing calculators in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, etc. A W S (2) Staff 25. Office Equipment—Spirit duplicator, mimeograph, transcribing and copying machines, etc. Prerequisite: Office Administration 1 or equivalent. A W (2) O. Brown 30. Records Management—Management, indexing and filing of business records. Prerequisite: Office Administration 1 or equivalent. A W (2) Jarrett, Kraus 33. Business Communication—Use of memos, letters, reports, etc., in applying the fundamental principles of effective business communication. Prerequisite: English 3. A W S (3) Favero, Henrie 101. Advanced Typewriting—Special communication forms, statistical reports, legal documents and business letters. Prerequisite: Office Administration 3. A W S (3) Jarrett, Kraus 102. Typewriting Speedbuilding—Development of sustained typing power and techniques. Prerequisite: Office Administration 2 or equivalent. W S (3) Kraus 110. Applied Shorthand Transcription—Practical application of shorthand transcription techniques. Review of punctuation, grammar, capitalization, etc., relating to mailable transcripts. Prerequisites: Shorthand speed of 80 to 100 or above, typewriting speed of 40 or above. W S (3) Jarrett 111. Intermediate Shorthand, Dictation, and Transcription —Speed dictation with stress on fluency and accuracy of writing. An entrance speed of at least 90 words per minute is required. Prerequisites: Office Administration 3 and 13 or equivalent. A W S (4) Henrie, Jarrett 112. Advanced Shorthand—Intense dictation. An entrance speed of at least 110 words per minute is required. Prerequisite: Office Administration 111 or equivalent. W S (4) Henrie 113. Advanced Speedbuilding and Transcription—Continuation of Office Administration 112.
