Show Education General Education Requirements—A student may satisfy the general education requirements by completing a minimum of 40 credit hours in the four areas of Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Family Life Education has specific requirements in. these four areas—check with your advisor. Homemaking Education, Lower Division—The following are lower division requirements for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Homemaking Education. To complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in this area a student would transfer to another four-year school for the last two years. Professional Requirements—(32 hours selected from four areas) Foods and Nutrition: 2, 3, 6; Housing and Management: 9, 13, 14, 16; Clothing and Textiles: 18, 23, 24, 25; Child Development and Family Relations: 33, 35, 36. Lower Division courses are offered for majors in Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics, Textiles and Clothing, Interior Design, etc. To complete a Bachelor of Science Degree a student would transfer to another four-year school. Child Development Major—This major provides opportunities for the study of Human Development and Family Relationships from infancy through the aging family which will: a. facilitate the achievement of successful marriage and parenthood through increased self-understanding and appreciation of insight and skills basic for effective human relationships. b. lead to professional competency for those who are interested in vocational opportunities which are: teaching in and conducting a nursery school in a community center, a college, public schools, Head Start, etc.; working with parent groups and extension service positions in Family Relations, play director in children's hospitals and other established pre-school programs. c. Study toward an advanced degree. Professional Requirements—(40 hours) The following courses are required: (31 hours) Family Life 35, 36, 40, 101, 108, 109, 145, 149, 190; and 9 hours to be selected from the following: Family Life 6, 33, 100, 105, 142. Students not electing Elementary Education certification should complete a minor in Family Relations, Psychology, Sociology or a related field. Additional Requirements—(25 hours) Child Development majors who do not elect to qualify for teacher certification will select 25 hours from the following: Anthropology 1, 2, 110, 120; Art 30, 32; English 130, American Literature and English 236 Education Literature (3 hours each); Education 101; Genetics 30; Psychology 54, 101, 112, 114, 143; Sociology 30, 110, 115, 121, 150; and Speech 1. Related courses may be substituted. Students interested in completing a major in Child Development and who also want to qualify for an Elementary Teaching Certificate should consult an advisor. This major is appropriate for both men and women. Child Development Laboratory—A well-equipped nursery school which serves as a child development laboratory gives practical experience to students interested in the many fields involving human relations. Arrangements to student teach in the Nursery School must be made with the supervisor of the Nursery School before completion of the sophomore year. Family Life Major—This major is designed to provide opportunities for students wishing to complete a four-year program with emphasis in Family Life plus a broad cultural education which will: a. Strengthen families and communities; fill women's unique needs as a wife and mother and enhance their feelings of worth as homemakers. b. This Family Life Curriculum is basic to positions for which a broad knowledge of family life is required such as: Journalism, International Service, Vista, Peace Corps, Public Welfare, Business, working with Community Parent Groups, and Girl Scouting. c. To fill the needs of those students who anticipate marriage before completing their four years of college. Will also fill the needs of married women who return to school and the working wife and mother. d. Study toward advanced degree. Professional Requirements—48 credits taken in the following four areas with a minimum of 9 hours in each area: Child Development and Family Relations—33, 35, 36, 100, 108, 109, 142, 145, 149, 190, 191. Foods and Nutrition—1 or 2, 3, 6, 116, 117, 118. Clothing and Textiles—18, 23, 24, 25, 121, 124, 125. Management and Housing—13, 14, 16, 130, 131, 132, 133, 134. A minor or area of concentration could be selected which would enhance this major and lead to employment possibilities—such as Sociology, Business, Journalism, Music, Art, Social and Child Welfare. Family Life Office Administration Major—This major is designed for women who desire basic education for Family Life plus sufficient secretarial training to provide for professional opportunities outside the home, and is conducted in coopera- 237 |
