Monk, Assistant Dean for Instruction and Research; Floyd W. Woodfield, Assistant Dean for General Education. The School of Arts, Letters and Science serves a number of purposes. It provides basic preparation courses for students throughout the college and assists them toward a broad, liberal education. Working closely with the School of Education, it offers the courses and provides the instruction for the academic preparation of teachers. Some curricula of the School prepare students for careers and the world of work upon the completion of the baccalaureate degree. Others provide the foundational background and pre-professional training for students whose career objectives require graduate work and training beyond the baccalaureate level. The School, encompassing arts and letters, the natural sciences and the social sciences, has been organized to bring about a greater integration, unity and meaning to the ever growing and rapidly increasing body of knowledge. Although it is anticipated that within the departments quality programs will be developed in the various disciplines, it is expected that through the School organization mutual understanding and cooperation will be increased, and that there will result a knowledge and appreciation which will transcend narrow disciplinary areas. Students completing baccalaureate programs in the School will be granted either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree.
