Show Student Services CAREER SERVICES CENTER Director. Steven Eichmeier Location: Union Building, Room 280 Telephone: 626-6393 The office of Career Services has two major objectives: (1) to assist all students in formulating a Career Development program which will identify a major field of study that will permit them to meet their career and life expectations; and (2) to provide employment opportunities in the areas of part-time jobs to assist in defraying school expenses, and full-time career positions for new graduates and alumni. The Career Services Center also provides services to students needing workstudy through its Student Employment Center, and to alumni needing assistance in furthering and broadening their career through counseling, job referrals, and updated career information. The Career Services Center provides centralized and education- oriented career development, work environment, and job placement programs. Career development is an important part of the educational resources available to all students at Weber State College. Services also are available to faculty and staff members. Occasionally, students encounter circumstances that induce frustration, stress, and personal disruption. Effective strategies for coping with these situations and feelings facilitate emotional and educational growth. The Counseling Center provides group and individual programs to enhance development. Description The Counseling Center has a full-time, professional staff of psychologists and counselors who work from a wide variety of theoretical approaches. Any aspects of personal development noted above can be obtained by scheduling an appointment through the Center receptionist. Confidentiality Initial intake interviews and all counseling sessions are kept strictly confidential. Psychiatric Service A psychiatrist serves as a consultant to the Counseling Center and is available for limited psychiatric assistance through referral by and conjoint treatment with a member of the Counseling Center staff. HIGH SCHOOL & JUNIOR COLLEGE SERVICES Location: Administration Building, Room 210 Telephone: 626-6050 Toil-Free (within Utah only) 1-800 634- 6568 The Office of School Services is the liason between Weber State College and prospective students. Representatives of the College make scheduled visits to all high schools and junior colleges within the state and to selected schools in neighboring states. The purpose of these visits is to inform students and educators of the educational programs available at the College and to provide them with information about academic opportunities, application procedures and deadlines. Campus visits for interested student groups, student and counselor conferences, and the total student recruitment program are coordinated through the School Services Office. These programs focus particularly on recruitment, orientation, retention, graduation, and placement of these groups of students. Current programs are as follows: Women's Educational Resource Center Location: Union Building, Room 353 Telephone: 626-6090 The purpose of the Women's Educational Resource Center is to provide counseling, advisement, and support services to the older student returning to school. The Center seeks to promote better understanding of gender-based issues among students, faculty, and staff. Student Services General Informatior Services of the Center are designed to provide a supportive environment, help students overcome barriers, establish objectives, and achieve their academic goals. The Center is open to all who would like assistance. Multi-Cultural Educational Resource Center Coordinator: Melvin Gillespie Location: Union Building, Room 354 Telephone: 626-6082 This Center provides academic support services for over 800 minority students enrolled at WSC. The program elements of this service include the following: Counseling and Advising Liaison Networking Outreach Clearing House Workshops, Orientation and Seminars Research and Evaluation Policy Procedures and Program Evaluation Adult Student Services Location: Union Building, Room 354 Telephone: 626-6082 Adult students (over age 23) who are entering or reentering college have special needs to be met in order to make successful academic adjustment. This office provides these non-traditional students (on campus and off campus) the following assistance: Admissions Information Registration Information Academic Advisement Counseling Graduation Information Career Planning and Placement Information INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CENTER Director: Diann Stewart Location: Social Science Building, Room 380 Telephone: 626-6028 or 626-6853 The International Student Center offers a variety of services to students from countries other than the United States. These services include cultural orientation to help students adjust to Weber State College, Utah, and the United States, as well as academic advisement, social and cultural events, and personal counseling. English as a second language is provided by the ESL Program whose offices are located within the International Student Center. (See index, ESL.) All new international students are required to bring their passports and immigration documents to the International Student Center before registering for classes. J. FARRELL SHEPHERD UNION BUILDING The J. Farrell Shepherd Union Building is the social, cultural, and recreational center of the campus. It offers a variety of services to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. The Union Building is staffed with a team of professionals whose primary mission is to facilitate the learning process by helping students with their intellectual, interpersonal, and leadership development. In addition, the staff works to maintain an environment which fulfills many of the College community needs through: • Conference Rooms, a large ballroom, and a 225-seat auditorium that are available for rent. • Dining Service facilities including the Skyroom, the Gallery Cafeteria, the Junction Snackbar, and The Snack Attack. Dining Services also caters banquets, receptions, etc. in the Union Building and elsewhere on campus and off campus for the College community. • Student Activity Center houses the Department of Student Activities, which includes the Associated Students (ASWSC, Student Government), the College Activities Board (CAB), and Greek Affairs. • Wildcat Lanes offers bowling, billiards, and video games. Other services include: student ID cards, bus passes, candy and cigarette sales. The entire area may be rented to groups. • Art Services provides a variety of professional printing possibilities at reasonable prices. Some include the production of posters, banners, silk screening of shirts, hats, towels etc., buttons, plastic name tags, etc. • The Wilderness Recreation Center rents recreational equipment such as: cross-country skiis, camping equipment, game equipment, and canoes, at nominal fees. It also coordinates field trips and programs for courses and organizations. • The Bookstore sells all books and supplies needed for classwork at Weber State College. Paperback books, stationery, art supplies, calculators, clothing, and many other items are also available.
