Show Composite Teaching Majors PROGRAM: COMPOSITE MUSIC EDUCATION TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAM: PHYSICAL SCIENCE MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific College Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the social science area is recommended for music education teaching majors. • A minor is not required of the music education major. • Music education teaching majors must have a 2.75 or better in majors courses and achieve an overall GPA of 2.75 or better. • 183 total hours are required for a single emphasis major (choral or instrumental) in music education. • 194 total hours are required for a dual emphasis major (choral/ instrumental or instrumental/choral) in music education. Sixty of the total required hours for a major must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a music education teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see the teacher education program). These courses must include the following: Educl95 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). • Computer Requirements: Comsci PD101 or CIS PD170 or Educ 320 or 483 or education seminars (TBA). Music Education Core (47 credit hours): Music 105 (3), 110 (4), 111 (4), 112 (4), 179 (1), 216 (1), 219 (2), 260 (4), 261 (4), 262 (4), 279 (1), 284 (3), 301 (3), 302 (3), 303 (3), 321 (3). Major Requirements (select one of these concentrations): Choral Emphasis (total of 94 credit hours including core): Music courses required (49 credit hours): Music 254 (2), 270 (3), 308 (3), 314 (6), 318 (2), 339 (3), 422 (4), 425 (3), Private Lessons (12 minimum) and Major Ensemble (11 tninimum). Instrumental Emphasis (total of 94 credit hours including core): Music courses required (49 credit hours): Music 250abc (3), 251abc (3), 252abc (3), 253abc (3), 315abc (6), 317 (3), 426 (3), 428 (3), Private Lessons (11 minimum) and Major Ensemble (11 minimum). Choral/Instrumental Emphasis (total of 104 credit hours including core): Music courses required (59 credit hours): Music 250ab (2), 25lab (2), 252ab (2), 253ab (2), 270 (3), 308 (3), 314abc (6), 315a (2), 317 (3), 339 (3), 422 (4), 425 (3), Private Lessons (12 minimum) and Major Ensemble (12 minimum). Instrumental/Choral Emphasis (total of 105 credit hours including core): Music courses required (60 credit hours): Music 250abc (3), 251abc (3), 252abc (3), 253abc (3), 308 (3), 314a (2), 315abc (6), 317 (3), 422 (4), 426 (3), 428 (3), Private Lessons (12 minimum) and Major Ensemble (12 minimum). NOTE: A student must be enrolled in Music 213,214, or 215 until piano proficiency is passed. Composite Teaching Majors General Information General Requirements: • Specific College Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Psych SSI01 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must have a C- or better in major courses. • An overall GPA of 2.75. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining one of the Physical Science/Mathematics/ Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educl95 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). Specific Requirements: Students must choose either Option I or Option II. Option I - Physical Science and Mathematics: • Courses required in three of the four areas: Chemistry, Geology and Geography, Mathematics, and Physics. At least 27 hours of specific courses must be taken in one area and at least 20 hours in each of the other two areas selected. Option II - Mathematics and Computer Science: • Courses are required in three areas. Both Mathematics and Computer Science must be included; and one of the areas of Chemistry, Geology and Geography, or Physics may be selected by the student. At least 27 hours of specific courses must be taken in either Mathematics or Computer Science and at least 20 hours in each of the other two areas. • Chemistry courses required: Twenty seven hour list: Chem NS121 (5), NS122 (5), 123 (5); at least twelve hours from Chem 213 (5), 311 (4), 312 (4), 341 (4). Twenty hour list: Chem NS121 (5), NS122 (5), 123 (5); five hours from Chem 213 (5), 311 (4), 312 (4). • Geology and Geography courses required: Twenty-seven hour list: Geol NS101 (5) or NS111 (5) or 420 (5); 112 (1), NS121 (4), 122 (5), 295 (1-8) and/or 495 (1-8); two of Geol 306 (4), 315 (4), or 318 (4); Geogr NS101 (5). Twenty hours list: Geology NS101 (5) or NS111 (5) or 420 (5); 112 (1), NS121 (4), 122 (5), 295 (1-8) and/or 495 (1-8); one of Geol 306 (4), 318 (4), or 315 (4); Geogr NS101 (5) recommended. • Mathematics courses required: Twenty-seven hour list: Math 107 (5), 211 (5), 212 (5), 213 (4); 310 (3) or 312 (3) or 331 (3); one additional course selected from: Math 310 (3), 331 (3), 335 (3), 341(4). Twenty hour list: Phsx NS261 (4), NS262 (4), NS263 (4), 264 (1), 265 (1), 266 (1); at least five hours from Phsx NS101 (5), NS103 (5), NS107 (5), 311 (3), 341 (4), 342 (4), 351 (3), 352 (3), 461 (4), 462 (4). • Computer Science courses required: Twenty-seven hour list: Comsci PD101 (4) or CIS PD170 (4); Educ 320 (3) or Comsci 360 (4); two language courses selected from Comsci 130 (4), 240 (4), 250 (4), 260 (4), 270 (4), or CIS 220 (4); Comsci 201 (4) and Comsci 215 (4); two additional, approved, upper division courses in Comsci (may include CIS 300). Social Science Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. Must achieve an overall 2.75 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Students obtaining a Social Science Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). Teaching majors and minors in the social sciences must also take Educ 450 (3). Specific Requirements: • The Social Science Composite Teaching major consists of an academic major in one of the following three areas: Geography, History, Political Science (see index for program). • As well as the above major, a total of 45 credit hours in three of the academic disciplines listed in areas 1 and 2 below. At least one of the three concentrations must be from those listed in area 1 and different from the area chosen as a major. A minimum of fourteen credit hours approved by the Social Science Composite Teaching major advisor must be completed in each of the three areas of concentration. Courses taken to meet this requirement may also be used to satisfy General Education area requirements if appropriate. Area 1 - Geography, History, Political Science. Area 2 - Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Psychology. • Support courses required: Commun HU102 (3) or an approved equivalent and Educ 450 (3). PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR (THEATRE ARTS EMPHASIS)-BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific College Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Psych SS 101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Theatre Arts and Communication Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Must achieve a C or better in major courses • Must achieve an overall 2.75 GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Theatre Arts and Communication Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educl95 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). Specific Requirements: Theatre Arts: • Minimum of 33 credit hours. • Because of the specific knowledge necessary for a secondary teaching career, the following courses are required for the Composite Teaching Major (30 credit hours): Theatr 100 (3), HU110 (3), 121 (3), 211 (4), 212 (3), 275 (3), 311 (3), 471 (3), 499 (3).
