the citizens of this republic ever again trust the echoes and emissaries of a tyrant proclaiming the right of might to rule and direct the actions, thoughts, faith and domestic relations of every individual in his power? If such there breathe, go, mark him well; For him no minstrel raptures swell; High though his titles, proud his name. Boundless his wealth as wish can claim; Despite those titles, power and pelf, The wretch concentered all in self, Living shall forfeit fair renown, And doubly dying shall go down To the vile dust, from whence he sprung, Unwept, unhonored and unsung. The New Year brings new tasks and new responsibilities to every loyal American man and woman. Citizens can no longer hide their heads in sand piles and escape the kicks thus invited. Citizens can no longer maintain organizations for dissemination of subversive doctrines. Citizens can no longer applaud treasonable utterances in the auditoria of an embattled nation. There are but two camps for able bodied men of this republic henceforth until the peril passes the camp of active participation in some form of national defense or the concentration camp. Drones are as dangerous as obstructionists, for the land is honeycombed with spies and potential saboteurs. Whatever the fortunes of war may eventually bring to the opponents of totalitarianism, this is no time for Americans to stand up in a temple or a market place and thank God they are not as other men are. It is a call for them to prove their loyalty, their devotion to the ideals and institutions inherited from forebears not afraid to fight for them, their worthiness to have and to hold the rights and liberties to which they were born and which they enjoy as no other people in any other land are able to do. Whatever the homes and families of this republic may lack in happiness today, let us wish and hope for happier years to come, an era of peace and progress to be ushered and make this the dawn of a Happy New Year.
