Show Henry Hooper Blood Passing of a Former Governor This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. Solemnly spoken and reverently preserved for almost twenty centuries this divine utterance might be repeated now by the brooding spirit of Utah gazing upon the silent form of Henry Hooper Blood. Without leaving behind him the memory of an intentional wrong, without a blot upon his public or private record, without an enemy among the thousands who actually knew him, Henry Blood lived and died a loyal member of the commonwealth, a patriotic citizen of the nation, a devout and tolerant Christian, a good and faithful servant of both the church and state. Notwithstanding his innate diffidence, his disinclination to be conspicuous, he never refused to accept a responsibility when it was thrust upon him, and never failed to give satisfaction in the discharge of duties devolving therefrom. There was something almost irreconcilable between the reluctance of Henry Blood to seek authority and his willingness to earnestly exercise that with which his fellow citizens invested him from time to time. Born in Kaysville a little over 69 years ago, Henry Blood maintained a home there to the end of his life. After serving as a missionary for the Mormon church in England he returned to his native state and taught in the Brigham Young college at Logan, but gradually became identified with varied business interests in Davis county, including agriculture, canning, ranching and banking. In 1901, after holding several local offices of trust, he entered the arena of state politics as minute clerk of the senate. Subsequently he served with credit and ability as a member of the public utilities commission and of the road commission. Elected chief executive of Utah in 1932 and reelected in 1936, he gave his constituents a clean, progressive administration and retired with the respect and appreciation of all factions. Governor Blood was a kind man who was fond of doing good for others because of the pleasure it gave him. No fellow creature was too poor nor forsaken to receive his attention, sympathy, encouragement and assistance. The world was brighter for his passing through it.To the bereaved widow, to the sons and daughters of the deceased, The Salt Lake Tribune offers condolence and unites with the people of this and surrounding states in mourning the loss of a beloved friend and fellow citizen. |
