Old Time Curfew Bell A gain Tolls Warning SPRINGVILLE Springvilles old curfew bell, preserved by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and placed on the city park as a reminder of early settlement days, will find a new usefulness in the present day emergency program. A request has been made by the protection division of the civilian defense council for the bell to be placed atop the city fire station to sound the alarm in case of emergency. The DUP, in a joint meeting, granted the request with a provision that when the emergency is over, the bell be placed again on the monument at the city park. The huge iron bell was used in early days to notify settlers of an emergency and to call the people together for important meetings. In later years, when it tolled each evening, young children knew it was time to be off the streets. It also was used as a fire alarm to call the old bucket and cart brigade together in case of fire. Finally its usefulness in any capacity disappeared, and the old bell was discarded and it was then the D U P gained permission from the city to preserve it as a monument to early settlers of the community.
