A Utahn On The Sugar Beet Firing Line WHEN a crisis faces a nation or an industry, often times defeat can be turned into victory through the efforts of one man of great ability and knowledge who appears on the firing line at the crucial moment. Right now, the sugar beet industry in Utah and the intermountain country faces a crisis. There was a large reduction in sugar beet plantings last spring, and as a result six Utah factories and five Idaho factories will not operate this fall. Most of the blame for this reduced acreage can be placed on officials in Washington, D.C., who stressed the importance of other crops and offered price guarantees which influenced farmers to plant crops other than sugar beets. With the western sugar beet industry facing this crisis, Utahns and other westerners will welcome the election of Fred G. Taylor of Salt Lake as fice president of the Utah States Beet Sugar Association. Mr. Taylor, vice president and assistant general manager of the Utah Idaho Sugar Company, will make his headquarters in Washington, D.C. where he will be on the firing line in the fight to save the sugar beet industry. The Salt Laker is acquainted with every phase of the industry, having been connected with it since 1898. He has worked as common laborer in the beet sheds, as sugar boiler, mechanic, shift foreman, superintendent, general superintendent, secretary treasurer, sales manager and general manager of the Amalgamated Sugar Company in Ogden. During World War I, Mr. Taylor served in the sugar division of the National Food Administration under Herbert Hoover, and for seven years he worked in New York as executive secretary of the Sugar Institute. With the sugar beet industry facing a major crisis, the intermountain west is fortunate to have a man of Mr. Taylors caliber on the Washington firing line.
