Lady With a Broom When Ellie Lamson died they laid her out There in her chastely simple, neat front room. Within the folds of her tired hands they placed A coldly lovely calla lilys bloom. I do not aim for levity, my friends, But as I stood there in that quiet room, Ellie, with that lily in her hands, Did not look right it should have been a broom! In all the years I'd passed that womans house In summer when the flowers were all abloom Or in the dead of winter there she was A swishing and a swooping with her broom. One autumn leaf upon her walk and she At once would start to sweep it and to groom Her steps the pathway that ran round To her side door always with her broom. And when she paused to have a little chat With passersby whoever chanced to loom Upon the scene, you always saw her standing, Leaning, as she talked, upon her broom. So that is why I say it wasnt natural In Ellies hands that chilly lilys bloom She would have looked much more her own old self If in her hands she clasped her well loved broom. Author unknown to me. What the Sunday School Has Done For Me (Written expressly for The Salt Lake Tribune) By Ab Jenkins Holder of more worlds unlimited automobile speed records than any other person, and mayor of Salt Lake City. My first recollection of attending Sunday school was at the old Mormon church wardhouse by the railroad tracks in Salt Lake City. I was just a tot of about four years, and I recall my good mother, Elizabeth Hurlow Jenkins, taking me by the hand. Lessons I gained from Sunday school made a lasting impression upon me. The names of my teachers George Q. Morris, Jessie Morris, Bessie Hull and others will always remain with me. I recall one lesson particularly on the death of John the Baptist which I memorized by heart and presented to the class. It was at Sunday school and from my mother that I learned the Word of Wisdom of the Latter day Saints church, which prescribes the nonuse of tobacco, liquor, tea and coffee. It has been through living this code of health all my life that I have been able to maintain my stamina and endurance in athletic events. When I was a lad in my early teens I won city championships as a marathon runner and in more recent years have been fortunate enough to gain and now hold more unlimited worlds records than any man in the history of sport in any line of sport. I am grateful to my mother and my Sunday school teachers for the lessons they have taught me, and particularly concerning the Word of Wisdorti, as I definitely attribute my endurance to the fact that I have never tasted liquor, whisky or tobacco. By living these teachings I have profited in a material way as well as morally and spiritually. I always found that a boy or a man can be a he boy or he man and still be a faithful Sunday school attender. I dont think anybody would call me a sissy. |
