Show Prices High In China 1943 SALT LAKE CITY, Oct 27 Think prices in the United States are high? In China, they are at once ridiculous, preposterous and alarming, wrote Ruth Nowack, a missionary, to a friend here. Sugar has gone up to 120 a pound; toilet soap to 75 a cake and kerosene to 4,000 a tin. Wheat reached a climax in April when it went up to 800 a bushel and flour was selling at 28 a pound. Previously 10 went a long way toward relieving famine refugees, but this year 100 would not pay for sufficient food for a day. The letter was dated June 23. |
