New Years Resolutions And Heavy Responsibilities This is the morning after the old year. It is the beginning of another, and, one may wish, a better year. If all mankind could meet under a majority rule, a resolution would be adopted proclaiming peace on earth, good will to men. It is an occasion when mortals are supposed to bury their differences, acknowledge their errors, renew their pledges of brotherhood, forget personal grievances land face the future with confidence in the advancement and destiny of the human race. The record of the past has been indelibly inscribed on the book of fate. Recent events, written in blood and tears by the hands of fate and force, have crowded the chronicles with chapters of cruelty and shame. In the school of experience still in session we may have learned some needful lessons in geography, in psychology, in diplomacy, in patriotism, in reciprocal relations, in the preservation of a precious heritage of independence, in the manly art of self defense. If we have not studied the folly of self satisfaction, the buffoonery of aloofness in world affairs, the idiocy of isolation in this age of ingenuity, the importance of majority rule under a republican form of government, the danger of discord in an international crisis, the treachery of subscribing to policies approved by enemies of all democracies, we have been wasting our time as well as our substance. For five years the people of these United States have been menaced by the hordes of hate driven fanatics led by a hypnotic egomaniac with an insatiable lust for blood and power. While he was threatening the elimination of all popular governments, some benighted citizens of this republic professed faith in his friendship for this on his most obnoxious aversion and most coveted prize.
