But not Mrs. Ollie Soles of Astoria, Long Island. Shes putting in six days a week at war work for Pan American Airways. Mrs. Soles, a widow, is one of 110 overall clad women who work at the clipper base. Shes in charge of linen supplies on the giant planes that fly to Europe and Africa. Pictures of her five soldier sons are in front of her as she sorts laundry and counts blankets and pillows. Her duties are housekeeping on a big scale, Mrs. Soles says, but theyre necessary to keep the clippers flying. And, she adds, Ive never felt so worthwhile in my job as I do today.
