Show Utah Pioneer Attains Age Ninety Seven Nov. 17 1942 MURRAY Mrs. Sylvia Eliza Sanford Metcalf of Gunnison, Utah pioneer and widow of Anthony Metcalf, recently celebrated her ninety seventh birth anniversary with a family dinner at the home of a son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Niels on, 6196 Thirteenth East street, Murray. She was born in Hancock county, Illinois, on No vember 16, 1845, a daughter of Cyrus and Sylvia Clark Sanford, and came to Utah with her parents in 1850. The family settled in Springville. After her marriage in 1862 to Mr. Metcalf, she moved to Gunnison, where she has since made her home. Mr. Metcalf, stockman and first mayor of Gunnison, died in 1924. Seven of her 15 sons and daughters are still living: Mrs. J. H. Chew of Jensen, Mrs. Sylvia Caldwell and Mrs. Melissa Nay of Centerfield, Mrs. Clara Ludvigson of Gunnison, Mrs. I. S. Brown of Springville, Mrs. E. G. Nielson of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Carl Nielson of Murray. Other descendants are 50 grandchildren; 121 great grandchildren, and 40 great great grandchildren. Miss Virginia Nelson Will Wed Q. Rich Nov. 15 1942 Of interest in nuptial news this week is the announcement by Mr. and Mrs. P. LeRoy Nelson of 555 Twenty sixth, of the engagement of their daughter, Virginia, to George Q. Rich III, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Q. Rich II of 2522 Orchard avenue. The wedding is set for the near future. Miss Nelson, a popular co ed of Weber college, is secretary of the sophomore class, president of the Womens Athletic association and a member of Otyokwa and the Whip clubs. She was recently chosen as orchid princess of the school and was awarded the national championship in ladies fancy diving at a contest held in Oakland, Calif., in 1939. Mr. Rich, also a student of Weber college, is an accomplished musician. He is well known as a drummer, pianist and xylophonist, having won first place in a number of intermountain musical contests. He is also active in athletics and is a member of the Excelsior club of the college.Engagement Is Made Known Miss Virginia Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. LeRoy Nelson, whose engagement to George Q. Rich, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Q. Rich, II, is announced. (Loveland studio.) Drs nephews son. |
