Each course in elementary mathematics requires a knowledge of mathematical principles and an understanding and a working knowledge of the content of courses previously studied. Success in further mathematics courses is dependent upon this understanding and knowledge. For this reason, a student who receives a grade below "C" in a prerequisite mathematics course will be required to repeat this course before he is eligible to register for the next course. Placement Tests—Mathematics Placement Tests are required prior to registration of all students who have not com- 134 Arts, Letters and Science pleted the specified prerequisite courses from an accredited college with a "C" grade or better within the past year. The Placement Tests consist of a mathematics pre-test in addition to the ACT Entrance Tests. Students are admitted to Mathematics 001, Mathematics 14 or Mathematics 18 on the basis of their performance on the Mathematics pre-test. Exceptions to the above requirement must be approved by the Mathematics Department Chairman and the Instructor involved. Qualified students may waive the requirement of taking Mathematics 18, Mathematics 21, etc., by passing qualifying examinations in the appropriate subject. Examinations should be taken well in advance of registration. Arrangements to take the examinations must be made with the college testing bureau located in the Annex Building. Students are advised to review material to be tested before examinations are taken. While the Department aims to help students register for proper mathematics courses, primary responsibility rests with the students. Students enrolled in mathematics classes for which they do not have the required prerequisites may have their registration in such courses canceled at any time. A student who fails to get a "C" or better grade in a repeated course may be denied the privilege to re-register for that course. Baccalaureate Degree Requirements Students who wish to select a major or minor in mathematics must first file an application with the chairman of the mathematics department. Department Major—The following courses are required for the departmental major: B.A. Degree Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53, 54, 161, 162, 163 and at least 21 credit hours of approved mathematics courses numbered above 101. These courses must be completed with a "C" grade or better. At least 12 credit hours of mathematics courses numbered above 101 must be earned at Weber State College. Physics 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66. German 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or the equivalent in another approved modern language. B.S. Degree The same as for the B.A. degree, except that students desiring a B.S. degree may select approved electives in the place of the modern language. It is recommended that majors planning graduate work obtain at least a reading knowledge of French or German or other approved modern languages. 135
