Show Education Education College; the Chairman of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is responsible to the Dean of the School of Education. The College Health Service program is administered by the Department. Required Physical Education - three quarters of approved physical education activity courses. One approved activity course must be taken during the Autumn quarter. During this quarter the physical education testing program and the introduction to the values of physical education will be given. Men may satisfy the requirement by taking any physical activity courses numbered 1 through 29; 31, 32, 33, 34, 36, 48; 60 through 69. Women may satisfy the requirement by taking any physical education activity courses numbered 1 through 29; 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 48. Medical recommendation approved by the College Physician is the only acceptable excuse to waive this requirement. Health Education - Health Education 1 is required for graduation of all students except as provided in special curricula. BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Official acceptance as a candidate for a Physical Education major will be determined at the beginning of the junior year upon demonstration of satisfactory character and academic achievement. Foundation courses required for Physical Education majors and recommended for minors in Physical Education, Health Education and Recreation are: Zoology 20, Psychology 1, Anatomy 1, Health Education 3, Family Life 6, Speech 1, Library Science 40, Chemistry 5 and Physics 5. Also nine hours of Physical Education activities in six different activities; i.e., swimming, dancing, gymnastics, weight training, individual sports and team sports. Physical Education Major - Forty-five hours of approved courses including the following: 10 hours, Techniques and Materials (including P.E. 105), P.E. 83, 85, 150, 151, 154, 160, 161, 162, 163, 190, Health Education 105, 110. Emphasis in Health Education, Recreation Education, Physical Therapy, Dance or Coaching is permitted with the consent of the department. The courses of emphasis are recommended primarily in the area of materials and techniques of the specialized fields. Physical Education Teaching Major and Teaching Minor - same requirements as for the departmental major or minor plus professional education requirements for the secondary school teacher certificate. Minors will be offered in Physical Education, Health, Education, and Recreation Education by fulfilling 25 hours of .approved courses as follows: Physical Education Minor - Twenty-five hours of approved courses including P.E. 83, 161, 162, and 8 hours of Techniques and Materials. Physical Education Minor with Dance Emphasis - Twenty- five hours of approved courses including P.E. 31, 37, 39, 40, 83 85, 105, 109, 114, 111, 142, 161. Health Education Minor—Twenty-five hours of approved courses including: H.E. 3, 105, 110, 112, Psychology 140, and Microbiology 1. Recreation Education Minor - Twenty-five hours of approved courses including: 6 hours of recreation activities, R.E. 80, 88, 160, 155, Physical Education 31, 83, 105, 107, 108, 157. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Intercollegiate Athletics - A full program of intercollegiate athletics will be offered as a member of the Big Sky Athletic Conference. Members are: Weber State College, Gonzaga University, Idaho University, Idaho State University, University of Montana and Montana State University. This program is under the Direction of Professor Reed K. Swenson, Athletic Director; Sarkis Arslanian, Head Football Coach; Tom Ramage, Francis "Bud" Belnap, Douglas Hunt, Ralph Hunter and Lynn Corbridge, Assistant Football Coaches; J. Richard Motta, Head Basketball Coach; Phil Johnson, Assistant Basketball Coach; Edward Garvanian, Head Track and Cross Country Coach; Richard G. Williams, Head Baseball Coach; Ralph Hunter, Head Wrestling Coach; Lynn Corbridge, Head Swimming Coach; Earl Miller, Head Ski Coach; Mac Madsen, Head Golf Coach; Tom Low, Assistant Ski Coach; Don Spainhower, Athletic Publicity Director; Gary Crompton, Athletic Business Manager; Ronald Flygare, Equipment Manager. Intramural Sports - Intramural sports programs are conducted for men and women. The Men's Intramural Association, under the direction of Richard Williams, is organized to conduct the program for all men students. The Women's Intramural Association is under the direction of JoAnn Otte and is organized to conduct the program for all women students. Competition in individual and group sports is provided. Orchesis - This program under the direction of Sharon Evans is conducted to give women and men students the opportunity for creative dance study, composition, and performance; also, to stimulate interest in dance and to foster standards of performance, appreciation and understanding of dance as an art form. 244 245 |
