Show Much can be said of Weber's 1940 football squad, but the general opinion of the press speaks for most people. One sports writer can be quoted as follows: It is hard to account for Weber's fall from her position as top football team of the league. ... After her impressive victory over Idaho Southern Branch, 27 to 19, the Associated Press Sports Department said: If Weber College of Ogden fails to win this year's Intermountain Junior College conference football cham- pionship, it will be largely because the ten-team league doesn't play a round-robin schedule. . . . On October 12, Weber College won national recognition by her victory of 15 to 0 over Western State College, a four year school, of the Rocky Mountain Conference. Robert S. Kunkel, executive secretary of the National Intercollegiate Sports Writers' Association, in a communication with Weber College, said, in part: "Weber's victory has been chosen as one of the three outstanding victories of the week. The awards are made to those teams which most severely upset the prognosticators. As is usual for Robert Davis, the Weber football mentor had another successful foot- ball season. His record shows that football honors usually hold a place for those whom he coaches . . . New to Weber this year is Milton Mecham, almost fresh from the col- lege gridiron. His main job is supervisor of the dormitory, but his sideline specialty is as an assistant to Bob Davis. While Bob hardens and conditions the linemen, Milt gives the backfield valuable pointers. Weber welcomes Milt to the faculty and wishes him continued success in his stay at the college . . . Ray Wright served as senior football manager. |
