Lounge Proposal Presented to School Board A proposal for a_ student lounge has been presented before the school board for approval by Scott Chambers, Ben Lomond’s student body presi- dent, in behalf of the students of Ben Lomond High. The objective of this lounge is to provide a designated area with a comfortable appearance where students will be able to gather informally both before and after school and during the lunch periods. All expenses for this facility will be paid for by the students through various fund-raising programs. The area will also likely serve as a career guidance center and student lounge. It is hoped that either donated or inexpensive, second-hand furniture will be put in the student Lounge when it is pressed into service. Immediate use of the area would provide the students with experience in managing a lounge with its attendant problems and it would provide the classes an incentive to participate in the fund-raising programs to improve the room. ing to put drugs in their proper perspective and to show that a person with no contact with drugs has little reason for his many prejudices towards drugs and their users. The first person, Hilda Heardit, has never taken any drugs other than aspirin and drugs that her doctor prescribed. Hilda is a VERY STRAIGHT girl! She thinks grass should be legalized because, “Well, it’s no worse than alcohol.” She went on to say that, “I don’t think uppers or downers should be legalized.” Aren’t all drugs one or the other? This is one example of the lack of knowledge. Another Hilda girl said that all drugs should remain illegal because all drugs have been proven harmful to one’s health. Example number two. Hilda says that it’s not for her to judge the drug user. “After all, anyone can fall into the wrong crowd..” This insinuates that only the immoral wrong crowd takes drugs. Decide for yourself. Girdy, a former speed freak, doesn’t disapprove of drugs even though she quit. Girdy “lived on” speed and took acids (orange barrel was her favorite). The acids made her hallucinate, seeing purple and in her bath p.m. 3:30 p.m. TEEN'S EYE VIEW OF DRUGS diferent types of people: the people who have never used drugs, the people who used drugs but quit, and the people who still use drugs. It’s always interesting to hear about a person having a terrible trip, then quitting with a “Thank God” that they didn’t get burned too badly. Not Girdy. She quit because her boy friend asked her to and boy friends are much more important than getting ripped! Joe Blow is a senior boy whe takes drugs “for kicks. It’s something outside the dull routine of life.” He doesn’t consider it an escape from reality, however. He likes marijuana brownies, tea, joints, and pipes. He described a grass trip as “a mellowing out.” Well, there are your three types of people. The non-drug users are by far the most interesting. Did you know that marijuana is cut opium? That a roach clip is a type of drug? Before drugs can be intelligently discussed by the common straight, the facts have got to be learned. Not every trip leaves you resting quietly in a morgue. Not every trip puts you in a Provo hospital room with a tight-fitting straight jacket. The individual must decide for himself whether or not he will become a part of the drug cult. Whatever he decides though, he will need knowledge. Knowledge to back up his decision if he doesn’t use drugs and wants to stop others from taking them and knowledge to know what drugs will kill him and what drugs will give him a nice harmless trip if he does decide in favor of drugs. |
