Dynamics (5) Concepts of force, mass and acceleration, of work and energy, and of impulse and momentum are applied to problems involving particles and rigid bodies. Analysis in a simple and logical manner applying a few, well understood, basic principles. Prerequisite: Mechet 230,471 and Reltec 118. 483. Directed Readings (1-4) Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor. 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) Students enrolled in Mechet and currently employed in a job with significant engineering technology content (drafting, machine shop, technical writer, etc.) may, as an elective, and in addition to the program requirements detailed in this catalog, enroll for co-op credits. One hour of credit requires 100 hours on-the-job. Prior consent of the Department chair and the employer are required. Prerequisites: Mechet 332 and Mfentc 345. 492. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes, and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 499. Seminar in Mechanical Engineering Technology (2) Directed studies and group discussions about the application of new design techniques, processes and materials in the mechanical field. An examination of new technological concepts, and their effect on our society. Prerequisite: Senior class standing. Money, Pat McFerson Description The program provides majors with a broad overview of business with emphasis on teaching, supervisory, and secretarial functions. The department offers preparation for careers in teaching, office management, executive assistant, executive secretarial, stenographic, and other secretarial clerical professions, word processing, telecommunications, desktop publishing, filing, receptionist work, and related careers. Education In the four-year programs, the department offers comprehensive training for top-level positions. The two-year program offers extensive training for a variety of secretarial/ clerical job possibilities. Medical Transcription The Department of Business Education/Administrative Systems, in conjunction with the School of Allied Health Sciences, can direct students to those classes which will enable them to acquire both the foundation knowledge and specific skills needed for medical transcription. Departmental Policies Students for any degree from the Business Education/ Administrative Systems or Secretarial Science Program are subject to the following policies: 1. Students who have taken shorthand and/or keyboarding at another school will be placed in the appropriate level courses by means of an evaluation of their proficiency. Any skills courses that are by-passed may be replaced by elective courses in business. 2. Students transferring credits from another institution must take at least one keyboarding and one shorthand course or equivalent at Weber State College to verify their skills. 3. To enroll in any skill course, a student must have a grade of C or better in the preceding course in the same skill. 4. Business Education/Administrative Systems credits earned more than ten years earlier than the proposed date of graduation will not be accepted toward major requirements unless validated through a challenge examination or department chair approval. 5. Any deviation from the printed graduation requirements must be approved by the department chair prior to taking the course(s) in question. Elementary PC Keyboarding and Applications (3) An automated approach to learning the keyboard and the keyboarding of letters, reports, and tables using microprocessors. 102. Intermediate Keyboarding (3) Review of keyboard. Letters, reports, and tables using microprocessors. Prerequisite: Bused PD101 or 25 wpm. 103. Advanced Keyboarding (3) Tables, letters, reports, and other office applications using microprocessors. Prerequisite: Bused 102 or 40 wpm and Bused 200. 104. Speedbuilding Keyboarding (2) Keyboard review. Skill, speed, and production development using microprocessors. Prerequisite: knowledge of the keyboard. 120. Computer Shorthand (3) Introduction to computer shorthand theory. Application of computer shorthand in word processing applications. No prior shorthand knowledge necessary. 121.
