Show The Art Department sits on Weber State's modern campus yet remains decades behind the times in its production. A Freshman art major has some chance of lasting at least one quarter before all his creative efforts are stiffled by required projects which must be completed in an hour class period (which is usually long enough only to begin an idea). Or by one of the professors who doesn't agree that human anatomy is beautiful so he can't paint nudes - or nudes are okay provided they aren't in "obscene positions" - or nudes in obscene positions are okay provided "dirty" words are not also present. Having to fill required courses also kills much of the students' original creativeness. While he is filling these, he has no access to the use of tools and equipment which he could utilize to create an idea he has in sculpture, or ceramics, for which classes he may not register; his hours are filled trying to achieve a degree. Some of the professors are very understanding and willing to go to almost any length to help a student who is really serious about working in an area for which he can't register; there are those, too, who say there are rules by which they must abide. I say the rules should be changed if they kill the creative idea. Music is universally a channel of expression ... an attempt by man to impose tangible bounds to his vast emotions: turn them into something that can be grasped by the senses. Since music is primarily an effort to communicate man's emotions, it therefore cannot be objective. Each individual reacts to a particular aspect of music subjectively, depending upon their past experiences and their feelings at the moment of presentation. The Weber State Music Department performs several times during each year in hopes of leaving favorable musical imprints on the minds of the community members who attend their activities. |
