C. Dec. 1, America's first draft lottery in 27 years selected the order by which young men would be inducted into the armed forces in 1970. The first nation lottery since 1942 was conducted by placing 366 capsules, representing each day of the year, including leap year, in a bowl. The order in which the dates were drawn determined the order by which eligible men from 19 to 26 would be drafted. A further selection of all letters in the alphabet decided the order of induction for those having the same birth-dates, with the first letter of the last name as the key. In future years the pool would be composed only of eligible 19-year-olds and other young men whose deferments had just expired. The Dec. 1 lottery resulted from legislation requested by President Nixon May 13 and passed by Congress Nov. 19.
