Show A $195,400 grant has been awarded to the Weber State College Education Department in developing a new teacher education program. Dr. Caseel Burke, Chairman, announced it will be used mainly to release the regular staff from lecturing to complete the program. The advantage of the new program is that students will be learning teaching all four years in labs and in local schools. It should help recruiting, special aid to difficult areas for the in-dividual student, and take advantage of advanced technology. The program was, according to Dr. Burke, a "synthesis" of the best of other programs taken from nationwide sources. "It is not programmed learning," added Dr. Burke. Also released at the conference were statistics which show Weber State College with the highest percentage of graduating teachers employed in the State of Utah. The statistics also showed a 42 percent increase of teachers certificates between the fall of 1968 and the fall of 1969. Most students think of the library as a place to look for books and then check them out. Actually, there are ten functioning units within the library which work to give as much service as possible to as many students as possible. Three of these are somewhat hidden from the student's view. The Acquisition Department re-ceives book orders from the faculty, the library staff and interested students and proceeds to purchase the books. Once the books arrive, they are taken to the Cataloging Department and assigned numbers and subject headings so that they will be shelved with other books on the same subject and also indexed in the card catalog. The Processing Department then prepares each book with the proper labeling and cards so that it might be checked out by library patrons. The majority of books are assigned to shelves on the second floor. The supervisor of this area who helps students locate books they need, also oversees the study area, the typing rooms, group study rooms and the microfilm collection. Books from this area check out at the Circulation Department, whose librarian is also in charge of the photo-duplicating machines which are located throughout the building. There are cases when an instructor requests that certain books important in his classwork be taken from the stack area and put on a restricted use basis for the convenience of the students in his class. The Reserve Room on the main floor handles these special items. Any student having difficulties and questions in looking up materials should ask at the Reference Department. Inter-library loan requests are also taken in the Reference Department. Additional reference material may be located in the Documents Department in the basement of the library |
