Show Composite Programs Education Courses General Information • 194 total hours are required for a dual emphasis major (choral/instrumental or instrumental/choral) in music education. Sixty of the total required hours for a major must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a music education teaching major must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see the teacher education program). These courses must include the following: Educl95 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). • Support courses required: Educ 365 (3); choose one of the following: Chfam SSI50 (5), Psych 314 (3), Chfam 450 (3). • Computer Requirements: CS PD101 or CIS PD170 or Educ 320 or 483 or education seminars. Instrumental/Choral Emphasis (total of 106 credit hours including core): Music courses required (54 credit hours): Music 250abc (3), 25labc (3), 252abc (3), 253abc (3), 308 (3), 314a (2), 315abc (6), 317 (3), 422 (4), Private Lessons (12 minimum) and Major Ensemble (12 minimum). NOTE: A student must be enrolled in Group Keyboard until piano proficiency is passed. PROGRAM: PHYSICAL SCIENCE/ MA THEM A TICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SSlOl (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. • An overall GPA of 2.85 and admission to the Teacher Education Program. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining one of the Physical Science/Mathematics/ Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). • Support courses required: Educ 365 (3); choose one of the following: Chfam SS150 (5), Psych 314 (3), Chfam 450 (3). Specific Requirements: • Students must complete a minimum of 69 credit hours from the areas listed below. Two or more areas of emphasis must be selected, and the listed required courses for each selected emphasis area must be completed. Course work beyond the emphasis requirements but counting toward the 69 credit total may be selected from the optional course list for each selected emphasis area, or from the entire course list of non-emphasis areas. The selected areas of emphasis will be identified on the official student records. • Chemistry courses required (28 hours): Chem NS121 (5), 122 (5), 123 (5), 213 (5), 311 (4), and 312 (4). Optional courses: Chem 301 (4), 307 (5) and 313 (4). • Geology courses required (30 hours): Geol NS111 (5) (strongly recommended) or 101 (5) (acceptable), 112(1), 122 (5), and either 121 (4) or the sequence 204 (4), 205 (4), and 206 (4). Two courses chosen from the following list: Geol 306 (4), 315 (4), 318 (4), 376 (4) or 450 (4). Remaining courses to make up the required 30 hours can be selected from the previous list or from Geol 254 (4), 275 (5), 295 (1-8), 325 (5), 339 (3), 363 (4), 385 (4), 388 (4), 406 (4), 483 (2), or 495 (1-8). • Mathematics courses required (36 hours): Math 200(1), 211 (5), 212 (5), 213 (5), 241 (4), 301 (3), 310 (3), 312 (3), 325 (3), 416 (4). Optional courses: Math 321 (3), 331 (3), 371 (4), 421 (3), 461 (4). • Physics courses required (25 hours): Phsx NS261 (4), 262 (4), 263 (4), NS264 (1), 265 (1), 266 (1) and 10 hours from the following upper division physics courses: 316 (4), 317 (4), 318 (4), 319 (4), 320 (4), 341 (4), 342 (4), 343 (4), 350 (5), 351 (4), 352 (4), 364 (1), 365 (1), 366 (1), 461 (4), 462 (4), 463 (4). Please see department for recommended course of study. • Computer Science courses required (27 hours): CS PD101 (4) or CIS PD170 (4); Educ 320 (3); CS 140 (4), one additional language course selected from CS 130 (4), 220 (4), 160 (4), 225 (4), or CIS 220 (4); CS 265 (4); select one course from CS 275 (4), 266 (4), 302 (4), or 310 (4); select one additional upper division course in CS from the optional course list. Specific Requirements: • The Social Science Composite Teaching major consists of an academic major in one of the following three areas: Geography, History, Political Science (see index for program). • As well as the above major, a total of 45 credit hours in three of the academic disciplines listed in areas 1 and 2 below. At least one of the three concentrations must be from those listed in area 1 and different from the area chosen as a major. A minimum of fourteen credit hours approved by the Social Science Composite Teaching major adviser must be completed in each of the three areas of concentration. Courses taken to meet this requirement may also be used to satisfy General Education area requirements if appropriate. Area 1 - Geography, History, Political Science. The Problem Solving Process and Structure of Media Centers (3) Minor is not currently being offered. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. Interpersonal Skills for Teachers (2) 5a, A, W, 5 Experiences intended to develop basic skills in personal interaction and adaptation to teaching. *301. Teaching and Learning Processes (4) 5a, A, W, 5 Modules on fundamental concepts and processes related to human behavior and learning as they apply to instructional planning and student motivation. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 300 and admission to Teacher Education. *302. Instructional Planning (1) Su,A,W,S For Early Childhood majors. Module on lesson planning. Prerequisite: admission to Teacher Education. *303. Instructional Technology (3) 5a, A, W, 5 Modules on the basic concepts, techniques, and applications of media materials and computers in the classroom. Prerequisite: Educ 300 and admission to Teacher Education. *305. Current School Topics (3) A, W, 5 Modules on school health, cultural pluralism, evaluation and current reform practices. Prerequisite: Educ 301 and admission to Teacher Education. *306. Reading Methods (6) A, W, 5 Modules on the nature of reading, approaches to teaching reading, reading readiness, word recognition, comprehension, and assessment. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *308. Language Arts Methods (3) A, W, 5 Modules on teaching handwriting, spelling, listening, oral communication, and written communication. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *310. Mathematics Methods (3) A, W, 5 Modules on trends, methods, and materials appropriate for teaching mathematics in elementary schools. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *311. Elementary Science Methods (3) A, W, 5 Goals, methods and materials to teach hands-on, inquiry-oriented science. Modular based and taught in a local elementary school. Includes a field experience. Prerequisite: Educ 301, 333 or equivalent (except Early Childhood Ecuation majors). *313. Elementary Social Studies Methods (3) A, W, 5 Study of Social Studies Teaching in the K-6 environment. The purpose of social studies in the school curriculum, teaching methods, and classroom teaching experience (field experience). Prerequisite: Educ 200 (except Early Childhood Education majors), Educ 301. *314. Arts Methods and Gifted Education (3) A, W, 5 Modules on art-music methods and introductory exposure to gifted/talented instructional activities. Field Experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301.
