International Programs Special Programs General Information Microwave Courses Each quarter a criminal justice course is broadcast by microwave to Logan, Richfield, Vernal, and Orem. The microwave system features two-way audio and video communication between class sites and originates at WSU. Using this method of instruction allows students living in distant areas to participate in university courses, as well as reducing instructional travel costs. Personal Computing in the Nineties A non-credit hands on training program designed to give you a better understanding of personal computing in business, focusing on knowledge and skills used in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, operating systems and desktop publishing in IBM and Macintosh PC environments. Production & Inventory Control Technology Certificate Program Delivers quality education to areas of Northern Utah such as Salt Lake City, Ogden, Logan, Tooele, and Box Elder County. The curriculum is geared toward the manufacturing environment with such courses as Materials & Capacity Requirements Planning, Just-In- Time, Inventory Management, and Master Planning. All courses are taught by practitioners using instructional materials developed nationally by APICS and other authors. Early College Program Through this program, high school seniors have the opportunity to participate in the university environment while continuing with their high school courses and activities. Currently, 200 students from Davis, Ogden, Weber, Morgan, and Box Elder school districts participate in the Early College Program Health Professions and Outreach Education Currently through the distance learning area, students can earn a Bachelor's degree in Allied Health Sciences with an emphasis in Health Administrative Services, Health Services Training or Promotion, Advanced Radiological Sciences, Advanced Dental Hygiene, or Advanced Respiratory Therapy. This program is offered through a combination of independent study and intensive workshop sessions to health care personnel in Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Washington. International Programs Program Administrators: Dennis A. DeFrain, Barbara Hammond; Program Assistant: Lonnie Campbell International programs provide unique learning experiences for students from foreign countries and for Weber State students. Currently, special programs are conducted for students from Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. • Japan Programs: In cooperation with Japan Air lines (JAL), four separate programs are being conducted on an annual basis, one year language program, two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Secretarial Science, three week program for JAL stewardess aspirants, and a three-week summer program for Japanese youth. In conjunction with the Hankyu Corporation, another large Japanese firm, a two-week summer program for 13- 18 year old Japanese students will be conducted annually. • Taiwan Programs: Each summer 60-65 Chinese students from Taiwan explore the National Parks of the West and/or Alaska, while studying English and history. A summer four week program for Taiwan teens is conducted annually. In addition, a one year language program, a one year secretarial science certificate program, an aviation program, a summer teacher program and other programs are scheduled for students from Taiwan. Global Community On a monthly basis, a four week English Language Immersion program for students from all over the world is being offered. Chamber Summer/Winter Youth In coordination with the Ogden Area Chamber of Commerce, several 1-2 week programs are offered for youth and adults from all over the world and the United States. These programs provide English or other language instruction in addition to a variety of other educational experiences. Professional Development Program Administrators: Stu Boyd, S. Our professionals meet with business and industry management to tailor the topic selection, format, instructor, and program level to the type of work performed by employees. For those preparing for career changes, a variety of training programs are also available. Each program is taught by instructors and leaders who are both business practitioners and experienced educators. Seminars and Workshops Career-oriented workshops and seminars are presented to assist individuals who want to keep current with the latest knowledge and techniques in their chosen careers. Career areas include but are not limited to allied health, law enforcement, technology, management, and verbal and written communication. Selected programs include: Technical Writing, Just-In-Time, First Line Supervisory Training, Personal Profiles, Assessing Biased Communications Patterns, Total Quality Management, Environmental Issues, International Protocol, and many more. Certificate Programs Several short courses which focus on significant areas of a subject matter are combined to create a certificate program. Upon completion of course requirements, individuals can earn a Continuing Education Certificate. Selected programs include: Human Resource Management, Supervision, Customer Service, Organizational Communications, Personal Computer Literacy, Production and Inventory Control, Occupational Health Nurse, Long Term Care Nurse. Contract Training Programs Our professional team provides analysis, design, delivery and administration of training services in direct response to a business' specific training needs. Location, times, and training content will be based on the preference of each business. This type of training ensures a substantial cost savings per employee; saves valuable traveling time and costs; encourages a cooperative effort in problem solving; and brings together employees of similar backgrounds, needs, and interests. Conferences Over 50 conferences each year are planned and facilitated through Continuing Education for professional, business, government, high school, campus and community organizations. With cooperation and utilization of the WSU Campus Life auxiliaries, Continuing Education hosts over 10,000 guests a year of the Weber State University campus. Selected conferences include: Boys State, Families Alive, Undergraduate Literature Conference, Northern Utah Women's Conference, Reading/Writing Conference, Expanding Your Horizons, Secretarial Conference, National Debate Institute West, Total Quality Management, and Leaders in Business. Utah Law Enforcement Academy Weber State University has been sanctioned as an official training site for law enforcement classes by the Division of Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), State of Utah. Our program is divided into two categories: Category I-Basic Training for Peace Officers is designed for certification as a peace officer with full police powers. The course covers a six month training period with 449 actual class hours. Two classes consisting of 64 students are run each year. Category II-Basic Training for Reserve, Correctional, or Special Function Officers fills requirements to become a jailer, a constable, a Protective Service Officer for the Utah Highway Patrol, a Special Function Officer at the Highway Patrol, Ports of Entry, or security personnel for business and industry. Training consists of 140 hours of classwork covered in 12 weeks. Over 80 students enroll yearly in the four sessions offered. Special Programs Program Administrator: Ruth V. All of these activities are federally funded which brings grants totaling over $500,000 to the University.
