Show Zoology Zoology General Information Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 51 credit hours of Zoology courses. Zool NS160, General Zoology, or equivalent knowledge, is a prerequisite of all Zoology classes except Zool NS 180, NS201, 202, NS230 and may be counted in the major. • Zoology courses required (35 credit hours selected from the following): Zool NS160 (5), 211 (5), 212 (5) or 405 (5), 299 (1), 330 (5), 372 (4), 420 (5) or 421 (5), 440 (4) or 445 (4) or 447 (4) or 448 (4), 499 (1). SPECIAL EMPHASES: Pre-Medical Professional Training: Students considering application to medical, dental, veterinary, physical therapy, optometry, and pharmacy schools should consult the beginning of the College of Science section of this catalog. Furthermore, they should meet with the advisers of these programs, each of whom is listed in that section. The Department of Zoology offers lower and upper level courses that provide superb training for examinations such as the Medical College Admissions Test, as well as medical school courses. Students should meet with the appropriate adviser for specific course suggestions. Environmental Conservation: Wildlife Conservation Officer - This program is specifically designed to train students interested in law enforcement careers with state and federal fish and wildlife agencies. General Requirements: • Zoology major is required. • A Minor in Criminal Justice with a Law Enforcement concentration is recommended. (See Criminal Justice section of the catalog.) • An overall GPA of 2.00 is required. Ecology - The various courses in animal ecology offered by the Department of Zoology also provide excellent training for employment in a variety of other environmental fields. PROGRAM: ZOOLOGY TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SSlOl (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Zoology Teaching majors. • A minor is required. (Zoology teaching majors should complete a minor in Botany.) • Zoology teaching majors must have a C- or better in major courses. • Zoology teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.50 GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above.) • Students selecting a Zoology teaching major must satisfy the College of Education Certification. PROGRAM: ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill the requirements for the Zoology major or Zoology Teaching Major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling requirements for a Zoology department major take at least 20 hours on an Honors basis in any Zoology course above number 300. • Complete senior seminar with department Honors credit. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the {Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: ZOOLOGY MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C- or better in the approved Zoology courses. BIOTECHNICIAN TRAINING PROGRAM The Department of Zoology participates with the Departments of Botany and Microbiology in the Associate of Science degree and 3rd year Certificate in Biotechnician training for the biotechnology industry. EMPHASIS IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING This program provides a special emphasis in Urban and Regional Planning for majors in Botany, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Microbiology, Political Science, Sociology, Zoology, and related fields. General Zoology (5) Su, A, W, S Introduction to the study of animals including cell biology, physiology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and a survey of major groups. Prerequisite for all Zoology major classes except NS201, 202 and NS230. Five hours of lecture per week. NS180. Human Biology (5) A, IV, S Survey course for non-Zoology majors. Course content includes basic structure and function of the human body, heredity, human evolution and ecology, and their implications for health and society. Five hours of lecture per week. NS201. Human Physiology (5) Su,A, W,S Functional and anatomical consideration of the human body. Recommended for all curricula for which basic understanding of the body functions is required. Four lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. 202. Human Anatomy (4) Su, A, S Structure of the human body systems. Three lectures and one 3- hour lab a week. 211.
