Show • Filling out a waiver request form obtained at the Graduation Office, AD102; • Where necessary, obtaining the signed recommendation of the department chair and the dean of the school and returning it to the Graduation Office. Major and minor program changes and waivers will be requested through the department and dean of the school and when approved will be logged directly into the computer. Students whose requests have been denied and who desire to appeal the decision may submit a written request to appear before the committee in person. Students will be notified of all committee decisions within one week. REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSOCIATE DEGREES Associate of Arts and Associate of Science A candidate for graduation with an Associate Degree must complete a minimum of 93 credit hours. Students must include in the 93 credits the "Specific College Requirements" and the "Requirements for General Education" listed under the requirements for the corresponding Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree (see page 15), with the exception of the state requirement in American History, Government, and Economics. The Associate of Arts degree also requires a minimum of 15 credits in one or more foreign languages or two high school units of one foreign language with at least one additional course in the same language completed in college. Three high school units of the same foreign language completed in high school satisfy the language requirement. In a school or department where there is a curriculum specified for general education, that curriculum substitutes for the "Requirements for General Education." Associate of Applied Science The program leading to the Associate of Applied Science Degree is primarily oriented toward job entry and is normally designed for students who wish to complete a formal education in two years (93 quarter hours). Preparation for this degree includes theory courses, shop and laboratory activities, directed work experiences, and general education A candidate for the Associate of Applied Science Degree must complete the following requirements: • A minimum of 93 credit hours. • The required courses in the major discipline and/or related subject areas to a maximum of 67 credit hours. • English 101. • One other English course in written or oral communication specified by the candidate's department curriculum. • At least 20 hours from the general education courses listed in the catalog including at least one course in each of the four areas of Humanities (HU), Natural Science (NS), Social Science (SS), and Personal Development (PD). The curriculum for the student's major is described in the catalog listing of each department utilizing the Associate of Applied Science Degree. Residency Requirement A student must have completed a minimum of 30 credits at Weber State College for the title of Associate of Arts, Science, or Applied Science. Students must also be registered at the college during at least one quarter following the last commencement prior to their graduation. REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR DEGREES Credit Requirements A candidate for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, or a Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree must have completed a niinimum of 183 credits. A minimum of 60 credits of upper-division work must be completed. Foreign Language Requirement A candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete 24 credits, or the equivalent, in one or more approved foreign languages. A maximum of 15 college credits from high school may count toward filling the foreign language requirement provided the student can pass an examination to demonstrate proficiency in the subject (For a list of examinations see the Foreign Language Department in this catalog.) Transfer credit from another institution will be recognized without an examination. Major Requirements Major programs which require a minor will consist of not fewer than 40 and not more than 60 credits in the major field. Major programs without a minor shall consist of not more than 85 credits in the major field. Minor Requirements A minor is a program of study generally selected to complement and strengthen a student's major and/or enrich the student's overall educational program. Some bachelor degree programs do not require a minor. See your major program of study outline to determine if a minor is required. Residency Requirement A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree must have a minimum of 45 credits in residence at Weber State College and be registered at the College during at least one quarter following the last commencement prior to graduation. School or Department Requirements Further information concerning specific courses will be provided under the discussion of school or department requirements and instructions. Candidates for graduation in the School of Education must meet the minimum requirements as outlined by the Utah State Board of Education for certification of elementary and secondary schools. General Information 14 Specific College Requirements All candidates must include in the 183 credits required for graduation the following: • English 101, 102 - 8 credit hours. • Health 101 or 102 or 103 - 2 credit hours. • Physical education activities* - 3 credit hours. *(Physical Education Courses numbered from 100-160, three different areas required; Athletics Courses numbered from 151-168; and Dance Courses numbered from 146-153, 247-249, and 251 may be used to satisfy the Physical Education activities requirements.) The state requirement in American history, government, and economics may be satisfied by any of the following: • Completing one of the following courses: Econ SS274; Hist SS170 or Polsci SSI 10. (These courses may also be applied to general education requirements.) • Presenting advanced placement credit in American history or suitable transfer courses from other institutions. • Passing a special examination administered before the end of the second week of each quarter under the direction of the chair of the Department of History. Mathematics competency can be satisfied by any of the following: • By having a predicted GPA in mathematics of 2.00 or better. (Based on high school mathematics grades combined with ACT scores.) • By achieving a score of 17 or above on the special ACT math proficiency exam available through the WSC Testing Center. • By achieving a grade of 2.0 or higher in MATH 105 or any mathematics course having MATH 105 as a prerequisite. Requirements for General Education The General Education Program described in the following sections is required of all students who receive a bachelor degree from Weber State College. To provide the broadest possible background in general education, the selection of courses should depend upon the high school preparation. The student who has done well in a high school course in a given field should not select a course that might repeat essentially the same subject matter. HUMANITIES AREA • Bachelor of Arts: Select 15 credit hours from at least 4 groups. • Bachelor of Science: Select 9 credit hours from at least 2 groups. • Bachelor of Integrated Studies: Select 12 credit hours from at least 3 groups. • One literature course is required for all three degrees.
