Show General information STUDENT SERVICES The departments and programs in Student Services provide services which assist students in meeting their psychological, sociological and academic needs. An over-all goal of Student Services is a commitment to solving student problems and in helping students become aware of services, activities and programs available to them. The personnel in Student Services will assist in designing, developing, implementing and evaluating programs to expand the students' personal development and enrich co-curricular opportunities. ACADEMIC ADVANCEMENT PROGRAMS Academic advancement programs consist of an array of services that are designed to support the enrichment of each student's academic competence and commitment Qurent programs are as follows: Data Management Service Location: Education Building, Room 01 ID Telephone: 626-6797 The Data Management Office provides computerized recordkeeping on those students involved with the various units of Student Services. The databased program offers a variety of reports available to requesting offices concerning student growth and progress, student retention, student campus involvement, student community involvement, and interaction within the various units of Student Services. Student Support Services Location: Stewart Library, Rooms 020-025 Telephone: 626-7009 Student Support Services provides academic support activities for approximately 500 students in the following areas: 1) Academic assessment; 2) Educational planning; 3) Basic skill workshops; 4) Critical reasoning labs; 5) Follow-up advisement; 6) Tutoring; and 7) Graduate school preparation. Supplemental Instruction Location: Education Building, Room Oil Telephone: 626-6871 Supplemental instruction seminars provide interaction between content review activities and procedures that promote thinking and reasoning skills. Supplemental instruction aligns a seminar-type discussion group with targeted general education classes to offer students support with both class content and effective reasoning and problem solving skills. Upward Bound/Pre-College Program Location: Annex #6 Telephone: 626-6798 Upward Bound provides educational support services to high school students who have the interest and potential to pursue a post-secondary education. A six-week summer component offers individualized instruction in basic academic skills and six weeks 22 of residential living on the WSC campus. During the academic component, participants receive assistance with their homework as well as career and educational planning. Upon completion of the program, graduating participants matriculate in a post- secondary institution of their choice. Veterans Upward Bound/College Preparatory Program Location: Education Building, Room 011C Telephone: 626-7173 The purpose of the Weber State College Veterans Upward Bound/College Preparatory Program is to increase the current percentage of non-traditional veterans entering and graduating from post-secondary educational institutions. The program provides participants intensive academic skills development; career, academic, health, and personal problems counseling; motivational and cultural experiences; special classes; and tutoring. ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT CENTER Location: Budding 1, Room 145 Telephone: 626-6752 General advisement is available to all students. Students who have not declared a major, or who are general education students, will be assigned to advisers in the Academic Advisement Center. Advisers help students who have questions about graduation requirements, policies, and procedures of the college. Primary goals of the Academic Advisement Center are to assist students in making a satisfactory adjustment to college life and selecting course work for a suitable academic major. Guidance is also available for students as they plan their registration schedules and advance toward a program of study. ADULT STUDENT SERVICES Location: Promontory Towers, Room 415 Telephone: 626-6336 (See section on Division of Continuing Education) ASSOCIATED STUDENTS Location: Union Building, Room 241 Telephone: 626-6349 The associated Students of Weber State College (ASWSC) operates under the ASWSC Constitution. The ASWSC is the student voice to the administration and serves the students both on and off campus. The ASWSC provides students a variety of activities ranging from lectures to dances. The ASWSC provides the opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and to impact the campus environment by service either as an elected officer or by appointment. Elected student officers include the studentbody president, two vice presidents and sixteen senators who represent academic and student life constituencies. ASWSC appointed committees and groups include the Supreme Court, the Senate Area Council, the College Activities Board (CAB), Community Service Organizations, the Academic Board Elections, Publicity, the Association of Registered Organizations, etc. At the time of registration, as members of ASWSC, students must obtain a studentbody identification card which is good for admittance to football and basketball games, the use of gym facilities and many other benefits. An I.D. card is also required for checking out books from the Library. CAMPUS RECREATION Location: Swenson Gymnasium, Room 108 Telephone: 626-6476 The Weber State College Campus Recreation Department provides each student, faculty, and staff member the opportunity to become actively involved in a sports and recreation program. It is recognized as one of the duties of this Department to encourage the student body to participate in organized sports, foster a spirit of fair play, and promote sportsmanship among participants, provide facilities for recreation drop-in play, and develop a competitive sports club program with other colleges and outside organizations. This is accomplished through three separate programs: DSTTRAMURALS, INFORMAL RECREATION, AND SPORT CLUBS. Intramurals The objective of intramural programming is to promote social interaction and fellowship within the College through a wide range of competitive and recreational sports. Participation opportunities are offered in individual, dual, and team sports for both men and women. Many activities are also offered on a co- recreational basis. Informal Recreation This program provides the college community the opportunity to use a variety of facilities for drop-in recreation. Facilities include a swimming pool, racquetball/tennis courts, a conditioning room (weights/aerobics), gym floor, playfield, and a one mile jogging exercise trail. For specific times and days, consult a facility schedule for open recreation, avilable at the Swenson Gym, Room 108. Sport Clubs The sport club program involves students, faculty, and staff which compete against organizations in a variety of sports. Included are: archery, racquetball, rodeo, skiing, soccer, fencing, fitness club, bowling and volleyball. People interested in starting up a new club should contact the Campus Recreation Office, 626-6476, which is open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. CAREER SERVICES CENTER Location: Union Building, Room 220 Telephone: 626-6393 The objective of the Center is to assist all students in formulating a career development program, starting at the earliest possible time that will permit them to put their education to work in a career field that will be both satisfying and rewarding on a lifetime basis. The Career Services Center also provides services to students needing part-time employment or work-study through its Student Employment Center, and to alumni needing assistance in furthering and broadening their career through counseling, job referrals, and updated career information. The Career Services Center provides centralized and education- oriented career development, work environment, and job placement programs. Career development is an important part of the educational resources available to all students at Weber State College. Services also are available to faculty and staff members. Occasionally, students encounter circumstances that induce frustration, stress, and personal disruption. Effective strategies for coping with these situations and feelings facilitate emotional and educational growth. The Counseling Center provides group and individual programs to enhance development. Description The Counseling Center has a full-time, professional staff of five psychologists and one counselor who work from a wide variety of theoretical approaches. Any aspects of personal development noted above can be obtained by scheduling an appointment through the Center receptionist Confidentiality Initial intake interviews and all counseling sessions are kept strictly confidential. Psychiatric Service A psychiatrist serves as a consultant to the Counseling Center and is available for limited psychiatric assistance through referral by and conjoint treatment with a member of the y-i Counseling Center staff.
