Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes, and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used, it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript 499. Seminar (1-2) To be arranged. THEATRE ARTS AREA Description The objectives of the Theatre Arts area of the Department of Performing Arts are: 1) To encourage understanding and appreciation of, and to develop critical thinking toward theatre. 2) To encourage creativity on an undergraduate level in such areas as acting, technical, directing, design, play- and script- writing and management To encourage non-traditional students and allow community participation in the theatre experience. 3) To develop an understanding of the principles of theatre and to develop the skills required for its practice and performance. 4) To prepare teachers, performing artists, scholars and technical specialists. 5) To expose students and the community to classic and contemporary theatre, cinema and television, and to continue to provide the community with the finest possible theatre. Education Two departmental majors are offered: 1) Theatre Arts and 2) Theatre Arts Teaching. Theatre Arts majors follow a program which provides a common core of courses followed by elective choices. Theatre Arts majors must follow a course of studies leading toward the Bachelor of Arts Degree. A minimum of sixty (60) credit hours (C or better GPA) must be completed in Theatre Arts Area courses. Teaching majors must also complete a minimum of sixty (60) credit hours (C or better GPA) from the Theatre Arts courses and, in addition, satisfy all requirements for the Certification Program as outlined by the School of Education. While teaching majors are encouraged to take the Bachelor of Arts degree, they may choose either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree. All majors must prepare to submit to the faculty during the senior year (and prior to application for graduation) some manner of comprehensive showing (e.g., portfolio, recital, etc.) of their abilities in the area of theatre. They are also encouraged to seek summer employment in stock or repertory companies relating to their interests. Weber State Theatre Program The yearly theatrical season includes productions mounted in „- oZ the Monson, Alfred, and Austad theatres. Because of these superior theatre facilities, a wide variety of productions is mounted in proscenium and flexible situations. The theatre program is offered by the Department of Performing Arts as part of the Performing Arts Series. The Utah Musical Theatre The Utah Musical Theatre provides the focal point for exciting summer musical theatre in the western region. Faculty, staff and student participants are selected by audition and application. PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS MA JO R- BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific course requirements of the college (see index). • Bachelor of Arts Degree General Education requirements (see index). • A minor is required. • Theatre Arts majors must have a C or better in major courses. • An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. • Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • All majors are expected to participate in each main season production by accepting at least one of the various assignments, such as acting, technical crew, costume crew, makeup, box office, house management, stage management, assistant director, or promotion. Also, it is expected that prior to graduation, each major will have performed duties in each of the various areas. These requirements are designed to ensure the breadth of experience commensurate with an undergraduate theatre education. PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS TEACHING MAJOR-BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: Specific course requirements of the college (see index) Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). Psych 101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Theatre Arts Teaching majors. A minor is required. Theatre Arts Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. Theatre Arts Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.50 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION TEACHING COMPOSITE MAJOR WITH THEATRE EMPHASIS - (See program requirements in the Composite Teaching Majors section of the School of Education.) PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill the requirements for one of the Theatre Arts majors, or Communication and Theatre Arts Teaching major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling one of the Theatre Arts majors, take at least twenty hours among these requirements in courses taken for Theatre Arts Honors credit • Complete a Theatre Arts Honors Senior Project A student may receive Theatre Arts Honors credit in any of the following courses: 301, 302, 314, 343, 351, 411, 412, 415, 483, 486, 493, and 499. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) Survey of Theatre (3) Critical appreciation of live theatre for the general student Attendance at plays and participation in productions are required. HU102. Survey of Cinema (3) A survey of the techniques, aesthetics, and social implications of the cinema. Students are required to attend screenings outside of the regularly scheduled class time. HU103. Basic Acting (3) For the general student interested in learning the basic skills of performance. 106. Theatre Dance (1-2) Essentials of dance as it relates to theatrical production. HU111. Theatre Orientation (5) For students with an above-average interest in learning about theatre as a profession. A general introduction to all aspects of theatre including terminology, practices, and procedures. Required of freshman majors and/or transfer students. 112. Physical Technique for the Stage (3) For students with more than an ordinary interest in actor training. Preparation of the actor's body to meet the demands of professional acting. 116. Introduction to Stagecraft (3) Introduction to preparation and construction of stage scenery and properties. Recommended prerequisite: Theatre Arts 111. 144 Lyric Theatre (1-2) Study of traditional and contemporary operatic literature through rehearsal and performance of complete operas and musical comedies. Membership by consent of instructor. (May be repeated for credit) Also listed under Music 144. 211. Vocal Techniques for the Stage (3) An introductory course to train the beginning student in the use of the voice for the theatre. 212. Scene and Character Analysis (3) Detailed study of dramatic structure from the play to the motivational unit and detailed analysis of a character in relationship to the play and other characters. 213. Scene and Character Development (3) Application and exploration of principles introduced in Theatre Arts 212 in performance of scenes from dramatic literature. 216.
