PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR- BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific course requirements of the college (see index). Bachelor degree General Education requirements (see index). • Psych 101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Theatre Arts and Communication Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Must achieve a C or better in major courses • Must achieve an overall 2.50 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Students obtaining a Theatre Arts and Communication Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). All majors are expected to participate in each main season production by accepting at least one of the various assignments such as acting, technical crew costume crew makeup, box office house management, stage management assistant director, or promotion. Also, it is expected that prior to graduation each major will have performed duties in each of the various areas. These requirements ace designed to ensure breadth of experience commensurate with an undergraduate theatre education. The Problem Solving Process and Structure of Media Centers (3) Minor is not currently being offered. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript 300. Interaction Laboratory for Teachers (2) Experiences intended to develop basic skills in personal interaction and adaptation to teaching. 302. Understanding the Learner (4) Modules on lesson planning, teaching, learning and applications of learning principles. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Admission to Elementary Education. 304. Media/Computers in Education (3) Modules on media production, equipment operation, computer literacy, and a materials management system. May be taken concurrently with Educ 302. 306. Reading Methods (6) Modules on the nature of reading, approaches to teaching reading, reading readiness, word recognition, comprehension, and assessment. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 302 308. Language Arts Methods (3) Modules on teaching handwriting, spelling, listening, oral communication, and written communication. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 302 310. Mathematics Methods (3) Modules on trends, methods, and materials appropriate for teaching mathematics in elementary schools. Field experience required. Special Topics for Elementary Teachers (3) Modules on health, multicultural education, effective school practices and gifted education. Prerequisite: Educ 302 319. Music in the Elementary School (3) (See Music 320) 320. Applications of Microcomputers in Education (3) Methods of incorporating microcomputers into the field of education. 321. Teaching Reading (3) An overview of the developmental reading program as it relates to secondary school with consideration given to the reading process, methods, and materials for instruction. 322. Science in the Elementary School (3) An indepth emphasis on methods of teaching science. 323. Social Studies in the Elementary School (3) An indepth emphasis on methods of teaching social studies. 333. Science Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) A survey of general science concepts taught in the elementary school. 339. Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades (3) Analysis of developmental reading skills with emphasis on readiness for reading, phonic and structural analysis, word recognition, use of the basal reader, and reading for various purposes. Prerequisites: Educ 306 or permission of instructor. 340. Word Recognition Skills (3) Understanding and teaching word recognition skills with emphasis on phonic analysis skills, structural analysis skills, dictionary skills, and spelling. 342. Kindergarten and Primary Education (3) The learning characteristics and learning needs of young children and how these are provided for in the program of the kindergarten and first grade. 343. Creative Processes in the Elementary School (3) Development of attitudes, methods and skills in creative teaching. Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing. 346. The Secondary School Student (3) Health, processes of adjustment, development of interests, attitudes and values of the adolescent 350. Principles of Teaching in Secondary Schools (5) Fundamental concepts and skills related to human behavior and learning as they apply to school organization, planning for instruction, and teaching activities. Prerequisites: Educ 300, admission to Teacher Education. Prerequisites: Ed 300 and admission to Teacher Education. 362. Utilization of Media for Health Occupation Majors. (2) Basic skills in use and production of audiovisual media for Health Occupation students. Lab fee required. 363. Media Applications in Secondary School (3) Basic concepts and techniques in instruction, and in the production and use of media materials. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: Educ 350. 364. Classroom Strategies in Secondary School (4) Select five modules for instruction and practice in specific teaching strategies from among such areas as laboratory method, individualizing instruction, games and simulations, inquiry and problem solving. Bilingual/Bicultural Education: Rationale and Models (3) Provides a knowledge base concerning the issues and rationale for bilingual education, and various models for successful implementation of a bilingual educational program. 412. Education and Minority Affairs (3) Examines the effects of governmental, social and economic issues which affect teaching and learning for students of minority groups. 413. Teaching the Culturally Different Student (3) Develops skills in designing curriculum and applying teaching strategies to meet the interests and abilities of students of differing ethnic or cultural groups. 414. Language Arts in a Bilingual Setting (3) Develops skills for planning and implementing teaching strategies to enhance the teaching of oral and written language for student with limited English-speaking proficiency. 438.
