Howard Location: Browning Center, Room 415 V Telephone: 626-6424 The School of Arts and Humanities offers comprehensive programs encompassing the visual and performing arts, languages, literature, communications, and mathematics. The programs of the School are designed to help students gain a thorough understanding of their cultural and aesthetic heritage, and to prepare them for employment opportunities that will take advantage of the special skills developed through rigorous study of the the humanities. The educational and cultural programs of the departments are available to both major and non-major students. Students may take the Associate of Applied Science Degree from the Department of Visual Arts in Commercial Photography or Visual Communications/Design, both of which are two-year programs oriented toward entry-level positions within their respective fields. The School of Arts and Humanities works closely with the School of Education in preparing students for teaching majors and minors and composite teaching majors. Students should consult departmental listings in the School of Arts and Humanities and in the School of Education for specific requirements for majors and minors. The curriculum of the School of Arts and Humanities is enriched by special lectures, exhibitions, dramatic and musical productions. Many nationally known artists perform each year before audiences drawn from the campus and the community. Description The Department of Communication includes four areas of emphasis: Broadcasting, Oral Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations. Education A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree is offered in Communication with any of the above emphases. Students majoring in the communication programs receive a thorough orientation in the process and roles of interpersonal and mass communication. Students develop skill in fact finding, analysis, and written and oral communication. Departmental minors are prepared to make a communicative contribution with their major field, whether that communication is oral or written. Minor programs in the department also provide valuable complementary training for majors in business, education, humanities, the sciences, and technology. The Department of Communication also provides service courses to help students from other departments develop desired communication skills. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 55 credit hours in Communication courses. • Communication courses required for all areas of emphasis: Commun 102 (3), 105 (3), 106 (3), 112 (3), and 113 (5). All journalism students must be able to type proficiently. PROGRAM: COMMUNICATION TEACHING MAJOR- BACHELOR DEGREE . General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in major courses. • Specific course requirements of the college (see index) • Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). • A minor is required • Communication majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Communication majors must have an overall GPA of 2.00 or C. • Teaching majors must have a 2.50 overall GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: • A minimum of 48 credit hours for the teaching major. • A minimum of 20 credit hours of Core courses: a minimum of 20 hours in an emphasis of either Journalism or Oral Communication, and a minimum of 8 credit hours in electives. PROGRAM: COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. Fulfill requirements for the Communication departmental major (55 credit hours). Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling requirements for a Communication major take at least 18 hours of departmental Honors courses, half of which must be upper division work. • Take Commun 499 in fulfillment of the Honors Senior Project requirement • A student may receive Communication Honors credit in the following courses: Commun 102, 105, 112, 170, 220, 240, 307, 321, 322, 380, 407 and 415. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.)
