Show Specific Requirements (confined): Family Relations Emphasis: • Chfam 101 (3) or 310 (5), 110 (3) orl 15 (3), 315 (3), 364 (3), 440 (4), 465 (4), 483 (2-4) or 486 (2-4), 492 (1-3). • Additional courses to be arranged with department advisers according to student goals. Family Relations combines well with other areas of study across campus or it can be designed to allow a student to study within one or all of the four areas of the department. Please see adviser. Consumer Education Emphasis: • Chfam 110 (3), 115 (3), 204 (5), 315 (3), 316 (3), and other hours as specified by department advisers; i.e., readings and related courses. Training for professionals in credit bureaus, family financial centers, family services, extension service specialist, and home economist. PROGRAM: CHILD AND FAMILY STUDIES DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain a grade of B or better in all Child and Family Studies courses. • Fulfill the requirements for the Child Development major, Early Childhood Education, or one of the Family Studies Major Options. Specific Requirements: Option I: • In fulfilling a Child and Family Studies Honors major, complete at least 20 hours of courses on an honor basis. • The above 20 hours should include at least 2 hours in Child and Family Studies 486 taken as Child and Family Honors Practicum. • The Student may earn Child and Family Honors credit in any Child and Family Studies course numbered 200 and above. Option H: • In fulfilling a Child and Family Studies Honors major, complete at least 12 hours of courses on a honor basis. • Two of the above hours should be taken as Child and Family Studies 486 taken as Child and Family Honors Practicum. • In addition to the above hours, complete at least 6 to 9 hours in Honors 499, Honors Senior Project The purpose of this stipulation is to provide an opportunity for the student to do a research project of quality to be presented to the faculty or to a professional meeting. The student is free to switch options with the consent of his major advisor. He may change any course selected for honors to non-honors status within the first 5 weeks of the quarter. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for honors credit A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor concerning the work expected for honors credit (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) Middle Childhood/Adolescence: Child and Family studies 150 (5), 257 (3), 286 (4), 360 (3), 364 (3), 450 (3), 492 (1), and an additional adviser approved two hours. Parenting: Child and Family Studies 150 (5), 255 (3), 256 (4), 257 (3), 286 (4), 450 (3), and an additional adviser approved two hours. PROGRAM: FAMILY RELATIONS MINOR, FAMILY EDUCATION TEACHING MINOR General Requirements: • An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. • Secondary teaching minor requires an overall GPA of 2.5. PROGRAM: CHILD DEVELOPMENT- ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE General Requirements: (26 hours) • A minimum of 93 hours are required to complete this degree. • The required courses in the major field not to exceed 67 credit hours. • English 101, 102, or Communications 102, or 103, or 307. • At least 20 hours from General Education courses listed in the catalog, including one course in each of the four areas, Humanities, Natural Science, Social Science, and Personal Development. • An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. Child and Family Studies 371 (3) and 372 (6); or Child and Family Studies 368 (4) and 5 credit hours of off campus practicum experience; or Practicum Experience both off and on campus (9). • Courses to elect from with approval of adviser (28 credit hours): Seek additional depth in Child and Family Studies. Select courses from across campus to enhance teaching competency in the areas of: Art, Science, Literature, Music, Health & First Aid, Foods, etc. Advisers will suggest specific appropriate courses. PROGRAM: BACHELOR OF INTEGRATED STUDIES DEGREE (BIS)- EMPHASIS: CHILD AND FAMILY STUDIES General Requirements: • A minimum of 25 credit hours. Required Courses: • Chfam 140 (4), 150 (5), and 340 (4). • Additional courses to be determined in conference with an adviser. CHILD DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY The Melba S. Lehner Children's School serves as a child development laboratory to give students practical experience in day care and nursery school environments. Students must complete Child and Family Studies 360 and 362 at a B level and apply to the Director of the Melba S. Lehner Children's School two quarters prior to the student teaching. CHILD AND FAMILY STUDIES COURSES-CHFAM m 106 101. Principles of Nutrition (3) Basic principles of human nutrition and their application throughout the life cycle. 110. Management for Effective Living (3) Management of human and material resources as they relate to time, energy, material, skills, and family relationships. Comparison of families with respect to goals sought, resources available and managerial behavior. PD115. Planning Individual and Family Finances (3) Understanding the significance of values, goals, attitudes, and planning in the utilization of family financial resources as they relate to increasing satisfaction and promotion-of good relationships within the family. PD140. Marriage as a Developmental Process (4) Learning individual, interpersonal, and developmental dynamics essential for sustaining interpersonal and marital relationships. PD 150. Human Development (5) Analysis of human development through the life span with emphasis on prenatal to adolescent period; including self-world understanding, application, and the adult developmental tasks needed to support healthy human development 204 Food Preparation and Meal Management (5) Basic aspects of food selection and preparation. Principles of meal planning, preparation and service through emphasis on realization of personal goals through the economical use of available resources. 245. Adult Years (4) Growth and development through young, middle, and late adulthood. 253. Learning with Your Child I, II, III (2) Designed to help parents become skilled teachers of their own children by extending child development knowledge and through sharing experiences with their child in the Children's School. To be taken each quarter for two credit hours. Prerequisite: Enrollment of a child in the Children's School. 255. Growth of the Infant (3) An exploration of the total development of the child during the first 18 months of li fe. Special emphasis is placed in the research findings that stress the importance of appropriate experiences for the infant and specific behaviors between parent and child that enhance more complete development Prerequisite: ChFam 150. 256. Toddler and Preschool Child (4) Understanding total development of the child, 13 months to 5 years. Students learn observational, teaching and professional parenting skills. Prerequisite: ChFam 150 or consent of instuctor. 257. The Child from Six to Twelve (3) Growth and development of the child from six to twelve years. Guidance principles of parenting and teaching throughout the child's daily life settings. Prerequisite: ChFam 150. 283. Directed Readings (1-5) Individually chosen readings on specialized topics supervised by a faculty member. Prerequisite: consent of faculty supervisor prior to registration. 285. Child Development Associate Training (1-9) Understanding Child Development concepts is applied to teaching situations with young children. Individualized training plans are designed to help students meet required competency. Course leads to national Child Development Associate Certificate, required by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare for teachers of young children. Placement in course based on copen tencies of each individual student. Consent of instructor required. 286. Practicum (2-9) Work experience which applies prior academic learning in a supervised setting. Prequisite: consent of faculty supervisor prior to registration. 107 |
