Show General Information Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling requirements for one of the music majors, take at least 20 credit hours for music honors credit • Complete a music honors senior project in Music 499 in addition to the senior recital. • A student may receive music honors credit in any upper-division musk course with the exception of the following: Music 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 350, 351, 353, 354, 355, 357, 360, or 361. Permission from the Department of Performing Arts Chair should be sought before registering in a course for honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for honors credit (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: MUSIC EDUCATION MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C (2.00) or better in all courses for the music minor. All music minors must complete sophomore performance level requirements before graduation. (Requirement sheets are available at the Department of Performing Arts office.) Specific Requirements: Minimum of 33 credit hours. Music courses required: Music 110 (4), 111 (4), 112 (4), 216 (1), 219 (2), 320 (3), 425 (4) or 426 (4). Great Epochs 302 (3) or 303 (3). A choice of one of the following: Music 250 (2), 251 (2), 252 (2), 253 (2) (250 is strongly recommended). Electives: Music 339 (3), 428 (3) as recommended by the adviser. Three hours of private study and 3 credit hours of major ensemble in consultation with the adviser. Share a one-hour senior recital on major instrument approved by the music faculty. Have at least one class in music included in the student teaching experience. These requirements are recommended. The division of music adviser may modify to meet individual needs. PROGRAM: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJORS-30 Hour Fine Arts Emphasis - 15 Hours Music General Requirements: • Elementary education major requirements (see the elementary education section in the Dept of Teacher Education). • A minor is required Specific Requirements: • Music courses required (15 credit hours): Music 101 (3), 169 (3), 213 (1), 214 (1), 215 (1), 216 (1), 320 (3), two quarters of private lessons (recommend at least one be guitar). Introduction to Music (3) Designed to give the non-music student a basic understanding of the language and literature of music. 102. The Evolution of Jazz (3) The development of jazz and its influence on American culture. HU103. The History of Pop Music: Ragtime to Rock (3) Traces the development of popular music in the western world (especially the U. S. and Britain) from around the turn of the century until the present Includes investigation into all the major styles (jazz, rock, swing, country, folk, etc.) as they affect and reflect society. HU104. Survey of American Musical Theatre (3) A study of the music in American musical stage and film. 109. Fundamentals of Musicianship (3) Melody, harmony, rhythm, notation, ear training, sight-singing and keyboard skills needed to meet entrance requirements for Theory 1. 110. Music Theory I (4) Elementary harmony, primary and secondary triads with inversions, non- harmonic tones, and modulation. Lecture 3 hours, lab 3 hours/week 111. Weber State College Concert Choir (1) Membership by audition or consent of instructor. 147. Sound System (1) A select performing ensemble preparing a wide variety of musical styles. By audition only. 148. Brass Ensemble (1) Training in performance for brass chamber music groups. 150. Symphonic Band (1) Membership by audition or consent of instructor. Emphasis is on the study and prepartion of modem symphonic band literature. 151. Pep Band (1) Plays at athletic functions using contemporary jazz, rock, and popular music. By audition. 152. Wind Ensemble (1) Membership by audition or consent of instructor. Emphasis is on study and performance of literature for selected wind and percussion ensembles of varying size. Participants may be required to participate in symphonic band. 153. Jazz Ensemble (1) Performance in modem stage band. Membership by audition or consent of instructor. 154. Marching Band (2) By audition and/or consent of the director to students on flags, rifles, and band instruments. 155. Instrumental Ensemble (1) Training in instrumental chamber ensembles such as trios, quartets, quintets, and sextets. 157. Keyboard Ensemble (1) Training in piano ensemble situations to develop fluency in reading. 160. W. S. C. Symphony Orchestra (1) Membership by audition or consent of instructor. Symphonic instrumention with participation in concerts, oratorio, and opera. 161. Theatre Orchestra (1-2) Membership by audition or consent of instructor. Instrumentation determined by the music production being presented. 169. Music Essentials (3) For prospective elementary school teachers. Rudiments of music, sight singing, notation, ear training, dictation, and keyboard harmony. 173. Private Instruction (3) All performance areas. One hour instruction/week Minimum of 18 hours/week practice required. One-half hour special assignment By consent of instructor only. May be taken for credit up to three times in any area of specialty. 213. Group Keyboard Instruction (1) Principles and procedures from beginning to advanced instruction with stress on reading skill, technical facility, and sound musicianship. 214.
