Show General Information General Requirements: • Specific course requirements of the college (see index). • Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). • Psych 101 (5) in Social Science area is recommended for Mathematics Teaching Emphasis. • A minor is required for the departmental major. In lieu of a minor in the Applied Mathematics Emphasis, the student must take Comsci 240 (4) or 260 (4), and 20 additional hours of approved courses in Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Pre-engineering, or Business. • Mathematics majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Mathematics Regular and Applied Mathematics Emphases must have an overall 2.0 GPA and 2.0 GPA in mathematics classes numbered 211 or above. Mathematics Teaching Emphasis must have an overall 2.50 GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • At least twelve credit hours of Mathematics courses numbered above 308 must be completed at Weber State College. • Students obtaining a Mathematics Teaching Emphasis must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education). Applied Mathematics Emphasis: • Mathematics courses required (35 or 36 credit hours): Math 211 (5), 212 (5), 213 (4), 300 (3) or 461 (4), 321 (3), 325 (3), 451 (4), 452 (4) or 372 (4), 453 (4). • Mathematics courses to be elected from (18 credit hours). Must include one complete sequence from the sequences B or E: Math 335 (3), 341 (4), 342 (4), 343 (4), 351 (4), 352 (4), 355 (4), 357(4), 381 (4), 461 (4), 462 (4), 463 (4). Other mathematics courses numbered above 308 may be substituted with departmental approval. Courses submitted to satisfy the Physical Science area requirement must include 10 hours from the following: Phsx 261 (4), 262 (4), 263 (4), 264 (1), 265 (1), 266 (1) and/or Chem 121 (5), 122 (5). PROGRAM: PHYSICAL SCIENCE/ MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR - (See program requirements in the Composite Teaching Majors section of the School of Education.) PROGRAM: MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3 and a mathematics GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill the requirements for the departmental Mathematics major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling the requirements for a Mathematics major, take at least 40 hours of courses numbered above 308 (instead of the normal 36 hours). Among these 40 hours should be 15 hours in courses taken for Honors credit, 3 hours of which will be in Math 475. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: MATHEMATICS MINOR AND MATHEMATICS TEACHING MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in all minor courses. • At least one four-credit hour course numbered above 308 must be completed at Weber State College. College Arithmetic (3) Fundamental concepts of arithmetic. Does not count toward graduation. 96. First Course in Algebra (5) Sets, relations, functions, positive and negative numbers, rational expressions, linear equations and inequalities, polynomial functions. Does not count toward graduation. 97. Fundamentals of Geometry (2) Fundamental concepts of geometry and measure. Does not count toward graduation. 105. Intermediate Algebra (5) Exponents and radicals, exponentials and logarithms, polynomial and rational functions, quadratic functions, systems of equations. Prerequisite: Math 96 or placement test 106. Trigonometry (5) Trigonometric functions and their properties. Prerequisite: Math 105 or placement test 107. College Algebra (5) Selected topics in algebra including inequalities, logarithms, theory of equations, matrices, determinants and progressions. Prerequisite: Math 105 or placement test 118. Pre-calculus (5) A refresher course for students who have had previous courses in College Algebra and in Trigonometry. 200. Mathematics Computer Laboratory (1) Computer solution of mathematics problems. May be taken concurrently with any lower division mathematics course. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor. (May be repeated with a maximum of 5 hours.) 201. Mathematics for Elementary Teachers (4) Fundamentals of mathematics. Three hours lecture, two hours recitation and laboratory. Prerequisite: Math 105 or satisfactory placement score. 202. Mathematics for Elementary Teachers (4) Continuation of 201. 211. Calculus with Analytic Geometry (5) Analytic geometry, differentiation and applications.Prerequisite: Math 106 and 107 or placement test 212. Calculus with Analytic Geometry (5) Integral calculus, transcendental functions and applications. Prerequisite: Math 211. 213. Calculus with Analytic Geometry (4) Infinite series, vectors, partial differentiation. Prerequisite: Math 212. 215. Applied Calculus (5) Topics and applications in functions, differentiation and integration of functions of one and several variables for students in Business, Economics, Life and Social Sciences, Education, and Technology. Prerequisite: Math 107. 241. Applied Probability and Statistics (4) Basic concepts of probability and statistics with an emphasis on applications. Prerequisite: Math 107. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript 300. Numerical Methods for Computer (3) Computer methods for solving equations, integrating functions, and obtaining statistical parameters. Prerequisite: Knowledge of a programming language and Math 212 (may be taken concurrently). No credit if Math 461 is also taken. 301. Teaching of Secondary School Mathematics (3) Organization of subject matter, methods of presenting particular topics, teaching aids, evaluation of results. Prerequisite: Math 213. 302. History of Mathematics (4) The major accomplishments of mathematics are studied from a historical perspective using methods employed by the discovering mathematicians. Prerequisite: Math 212 305. Algebra for Elementary Teachers (3) Prerequisite: Math 202. 306. Probability and Statistics for Elementary Teachers (3) Topics in probability and statistics. Prerequisite: Math 202. 307. Geometry for Elementary Teachers (3) Prerequisite: Math 202. 308. Number Theory for Elementary Teachers (3) Prerequisite: Math 202. 310. Foundations of Algebra (3) Set theory and related topics to understand the structure of the system of real numbers. Prerequisite: Math 213. 312. Foundations of Geometry (3) Postulate systems of geometry. Prerequisite: Math 213. 314. Foundations of Analysis (3) Completeness axiom for the real line and some of its consequences. Prerequisite: Math 213. 321. Calculus of Several Variables (3) Multivariate calculus, partial derivatives and multiple integrals. Prerequisite: Math 213. 325.
