Show October 13, 1930 To the Night School Teachers: There will be no Night School held next Thursday, October 16th on account of The Utah Education Association meetings held in Salt Lake City, School will reconvene Monday, Oct, 20th. All students attending classes should have their names on the roll. Please advise students whose names are not on your roll to register in the office. I have recently received a report on 200 cities in the United States giving night school work. The report was made by George E. Smith, Deputy Superintendent, Buffalo, New York. The following points were noted: Good instruction will hold pupils - nothing else will. Don't discourage "undesirables" - interest them. Night schools should be run on the same basis as day schools. Taxpayers should use the building they pay for free. Allow nothing to defeat ambition, however feeble it may be. Fees and deposits fail of their purpose. Mr. Smith's comment: Free public night schools for everybody are right in principle and workable in practice; few, if any, should be rejected as undesirables. A small returnable deposit eliminates the merely curious and on the whole makes for slightly better attendance. The small deposit often is waived where it would create a hardship. The small non-returnable deposit (fee) backed by good organization, works in spite of its defects. Its defenders advance arguments to support fees which local conditions seem to justify." 30% of the 200 cities reporting offer work free; 43% require a small returnable deposit (according to attendance); 27% charge a fee. Total population of 200 cities reporting 41,698,520 Total enrollment in night school 815,166 Attendance One in fifty-one of population is in night school. Fees charged range from free schooling to a $10.00 fee. School year 1929-30.
