Show Tigers Uncork Rally to Defeat Idaho Falls Five Utah Champs Assume Lead In Series for Intermountain Title Tigers Collect 16 Points in Final Period to Win Fast Contest, 41 to 33; Warriors Drop Extra Period Battle to Junior A. A. U. Champions By AL WARDEN Standard-Examiner Sports Editor O GDEN High courtiers, Utah scholastic champions for 1932, were one up on the Idaho Palls machine, Idaho cham¬pions, as the result of a last period attack last night which netted 16 points and a 41-to-33 triumph over the Gem state hoopsters. The contest was played before a near capacity crowd at the Weber gymnasium and offered a marvelous brand of basketball for the spectators. Dick Kapple's "Orange Streaks, trailing, 25 to 29, at the close of the third period of play, engineered a rally similar to the one they re¬corded in the semifinals against Granite, to pull the contest out of the lost column. Bill Kinner, all-state center, and Joe Fowler, all-state guard, were the chaps responsible for the Ogden triumph. These two polished athletes collected nine goals in the final half to assist the Tigers in their victory. The contest was exceptionally free of fouling, and offered two distinct brands of ball. Idaho played a de¬liberate game, and shot from both; long and short range, while the Tigers used a short passing attack j and in the majority of cases, worked' the ball to within a short range of the net. Up until the close of the third pe¬riod the teams were attired in prac¬tically the same uniforms. The sim- ilarity of suits undoubtedly ham¬pered the Tigers, inasmuch as they changed jerseye at the close of the third canto, to run loco in the clos¬ing period. This change unques¬tionably assisted the Utah cham¬pions in their comeback. Ogden jumped into an 8 to 6 lead at the end of the opening period of play, but trailed, 16 to 17, at the rest period. Idaho used an effective lob pass¬ing in the second period to jump into the lead. In the first half the teams alternated six times at taking the lead. Williams and Watson of the Gem state five were responsible for the margin obtained by the Idahoans in the third period. These two cap¬able athletes fed the leather to Green and Naylor, and these two colorful forwards counted consist¬ently with one-handed push shots to get their club out in front. Kinner converted a foul try in the fourth period to reduce the Idaho Falls lead to three points. Buckets by Kinner and Fowler in rapid suc¬cession placed the Ogdenites out in front, 30 to 29, and from this stage to the final gun the "Orange Streaks" held command of the sit¬uation. Herm Lehman, the whirlwind forward of the Tigers, kept his team in the running in the first half, with five baskets, one from long range. In the second half, his ball rust¬ling played an important part in the Tiger triumph. Ogden's dazling attack and all- around team play stamps the Tigers as favorites to win the series. The Kapplemen looked better last night than they did in the recent state tournament. They hope to turn back the Idahoans tonight and thereby gain the intermountain title. Kinner, Lehman and Fowler were the leading lights for the Tigers in the opening skirmish. Captain Dale Anderson, cool leader of the Tigers, also gave a marvelous ac¬count of himself. Ogden's club hit on all six last night, with Boreans pinch hitting for Weir late in the game. Naylor, Green and Watson were the leading performers for the Ida¬ho aggregation. Naylor, in partic-ular, was brilliant. This classy ath¬lete tosses in baskets from any part of the court with one hand, and plays a whale of a floor game Contrary to advance reports, Coach Barringer of the Idahoans started his regular lineup. Tonight's contest is expected to attract a capacity crowd. BOX SCORES OGDEN G. T.F.P.
