Show THE paintings in this exhibit are representative of a new phase of Mormon art, showing in oil, pictures of some of the centers of one of the most thrilling, yet tragic periods in Church history. Nauvoo, the Beautiful, was known far and near as the City of the Saints. It was there the Latter day Saints built a city which they hoped would become a permanent refuge. There they built their temple. But with the martyrdom of their prophet-leader, Joseph Smith, and subsequent persecutions, they were forced to flee, leaving the fruits of their labors behind them. The pictures of this exhibit show many of the homes of the early Church leaders as they now appear in Nauvoo. Some shown here have been torn down, but many still stand, a monument to the people who built them. By number the pictures are identified as follows: 1. Old Nauvoo. This painting was taken from the hill and shows the Wilford Woodruff home in the foreground and the Kimball home in the background. The city is shown in the summertime. 2. Joseph Smiths First Home in Nauvoo. This picture was painted in November, and shows the residence much as it was when the prophet lived there. 3. Brigham Youngs home. This is the house as it stands today. You will note that the wing on the left has had an extra story added to it. The home as shown in Neighbors of Nauvoo is the way it stood originally. This latter view may be seen in picture No. 14. 4. Wilford Woodruffs home. This picture was painted in January, the month which marked the anniversary of the marriage of the grandparents of the artist, the ceremony having been performed by President Woodruff. 1. The Heber C. Kimball home. Since this building was originally built, the wing at the left has been added, as shown in this painting. 6. John Taylors home. This building stood for a century, and was torn down but two years ago. 2. John Taylors printing office. One of these buildings was recently razed, but the other still stands. 8. The Expositor Office. This was the scene of one clash between the officials of the city and the mob. 9. Jonathan Brownings home. This building still stands in a fairly good state of preservation. 10. Home of Erastus Snow. This building, which still stands, has been altered somewhat since the original construction. The white house across the street belonged to a German member of the Church and has a German House inscription still visible on it. 11. The City Hotel. 12. The Jail at Carthage. This is one of the memorable places in Church history memorable because of the deep tragedy which was enacted there. Joseph and Hyrum Smith were slain at Carthage Jail. 13. Wilford Woodruffs home at night. 14. Neighbors at Nauvoo. This painting shows the homes of Brigham Young, Joseph Young, and Jonathan Browning. Also the printing office of John Taylor may be seen. In the distance the temple is shown. |
