Show Five Weeks of Training January 11 to February 12 A PRACTICAL SHORT COURSE is offered to those who would like to improve their understanding and technical mastery of the work in which they are engaged. This SHORT COURSE is designed to harmonize with the SOCIAL SECURITY set up of the church and at the same time to permit men and women to spend a few weeks in the middle of winter at Brigham Young University where they may acquire information which will help to improve the farm and the home and aid workmen to acquire skills which will enable them to meet the demands of the day. Registration Fee, 5.00. Short Course Offerings DR. T. L. MARTIN Acting Dean of College of Applied Science CONSUMER EDUCATION: Aids to the consumer in wise buying of foods, household equipment, and textiles and clothing. BARLOW. CLOTHING PROBLEMS: Demonstration of the use of commercial patterns. Measuring, fitting, and finishing problems. BILLINGS. PRACTICAL COOKERY: A consideration of some common problems in family and quantity cookery, including menu planning, family nutrition and some hows and whys of food preparation. SWENSON. CHILD CARE AND DEVELOPMENT: A course planned to give a better understanding of children and their needs, with practical suggestions for helping them make optimum development and adjustments. WARNICK. FLORICULTURE: A short course of study designed to aid in the art and business of growing flowers and ornamental plants for this region. Special emphasis will be placed on propagation, the use of cut flowers and their arrangement, pot plants, and the control of insects and plant diseases. FULLMER. SOIL MANAGEMENT: A study of ways and means by which one may produce crops with a minimum of effort, and a maximum benefit to soil fertility conservation. Such problems as farm manures, crop rotations, soil alkali, soil erosion, and soil bacterial activity will be discussed. Also a study of soil for flower gardens and potted plants will be made. MARTIN. AUTO MECHANICS: This course is designed for those interested in being able to determine auto engine troubles on the road, and to make light repairs. BIGELOW. LATHE WORK: Those interested in becoming machinists and those who may have their own home shop, will register for this course. How to make lathe tools and do lathe work will be emphasized. BIGELOW LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE: A general course dealing with the art of home landscaping. Lectures and regular classroom work will be supplemented by modeling. Models of houses and their lots will be constructed and various gardens and surroundings will be studied for effects. MORRIS. FARM PESTS: A practical course dealing with Utah insects, rodent and weed pests. Methods of control will be given. TANNER. GEOLOGY: A practical course in prospecting, especially designed to aid the layman in the indentification of common rocks and minerals, together with their field relationships in ore deposits. HANSEN. MARKETING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS: The inability of farmers individually to compete with the industrialist in the marketing of his products invites more serious consideration of the existing marketing processes; also, the rapid growth of cooperative marketing associations in both purchasing and sale of agricultural and other products needs analysis and careful study to determine the benefits to be derived. These problems will constitute the basis of the short course in Marketing Agricultural Products. JOHNSON. POULTRY PROBLEMS: Feeding, culling, housing and diseases of poultry constitute the discussion material for this course. IVINS. CARPENTRY: This course covers the use of tools, sharpening of tools, framing and simple stairwork. SNELL. MECHANICAL DRAWING: A study of blueprint reading, and the making of working drawings. .
