Show Danny inspects uprooted giant in Lester Park. The year of 1941-1942 was not only one of political unrest but also one of great turmoil among Nature's forces. Weather went on the rampage. State law allows as a legal excuse for absence from school the impassibility of roads. To those few students who managed to reach the campus the day of the big wind, the joy of a day's vacation was slightly clouded by the prospect of being blown out over the Great Salt Lake before reaching the none too secure sanctity of home. Winter storms surpassed those of any four months' period for years. But by some stroke of luck all girls were shod with high rubber boots despite the rubber shortage. Boots, boots, boots. Grandchildren will hear of the boot rush of '41. No puddle of water, no slightly damp spot was safe from a pair of waders. The pedal appendages of every female were encased from sole to knee in rubber. Some were enough to make a Russian cavalry officer jealous. Others made Buffalo Bill and Billy the Kid look like amateurs. In February a cold spell sent the mercury to astoundingly low depths. Spring thaws inundated basements and filled gutters. But books and students came through it all. At times Weber overflows the square block between Twenty-fifth and Twenty-fourth Streets; the geology classes, band and debate groups are notable wanderers. The pink and buff sculptured pillars of Bryce and the Great White Throne of Zion lure several bus loads of rock hounds forth each May. Goal of Weber geology students-field trips to Southern Utah. From Winter to Spring Virginia and Zeke smile for the camera in Homecoming parade. Weberites invade downtown Ogden and Washington Boulevard for the annual Homecoming parade with its club floats and traditional sentiment and for pep rallies and afternoon shopping. Many students, taking the place of workers called to positions in defense industries, found employment in town business offices, stores, theaters, and service stations. |
