Show General Information Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 26 credit hours for Reading minors. • Course requirements: Educ 321 (3), Educ 459 (3), Educ 465 (3), Educ 466 (3), Educ 478* (4), English 380 (3) or 381 (3). • Select electives from the following courses to reach the required 26 credit hours: English 330 (3), English 331 (3), Speech 107 (3), Educ 365 (3), Educ 463 (3), Educ 468 (3). • The instructor's written permission is required for registration in this course. PROGRAM: RESOURCE ENDORSEMENT General Requirements: • Elementary, Early Childhood, and Secondary Education majors can earn the Resource Endorsement, allowing them to teach mild and moderately handicapped children at all levels kindergarten through twelfth grade. Specific requirements: • Teaching Certification. (The Endorsement may be earned concurrently with the Certificate). • Computer literacy. • The following Education courses (31 credits): Educ 365 (3), Educ 467 (3), Educ 469 (3), Educ 468 (3), Educ 474 (3), Educ 463 (5), Educ 464 (5), Educ 479 (6). The requirements for the Resource Endorsement may change as the program is revised to meet the needs of the employing districts and state certification requirements. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR Students preparing to teach in first through sixth grade in the elementary schools graduate with a major in Elementary Education. Elementary Education majors may have one or two content areas of specialization or a teaching minor, which permits the student to teach the minor through ninth grade. Students preparing to teach in preschool programs or kindergarten through third grade select the Early Childhood major. This program is described under the Department of Child and Family Studies. The Director of Advisement in Teacher Education and faculty members from the Department of Teacher Education are available to advise each prospective teacher. A program study guide is available from the offices in Rooms 230 and 224 in the Education Building. It is to the student's advantage to begin their program planning early. PROGRAM: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR-BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific course requirements of the college (see index). • Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). • Satisfy the Admission and Retention Standards for the School of Education. • One 30-hour or two 15-hour, content area specializations, or a teaching minor and one 15-hour content area specialization is required. • Elementary Education majors must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher in all college work and in professional education courses. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: • Support courses required: Commun 102 (3), 107 (3) or 307 (3), or equivalent; Math 201 (4), 202 (4); Educ 200 (4), 333 (4), or Educ 322 (3) for students with General Science Specialty; Engl 330 (3); Five or six credit hours from Art 250 (3), Music 213 (1), 169 (3), 320 (3), Theatr 420 (3), Educ 343 (3); PE 362 (3) or 363 (3) or 364 (2); PD 150 (5) if not taken in Gen. Ed. • Professional Education courses required: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 302(4), 304 (3), 306 (6), 308(3), 310 (3), 312 (4), 314 (2), 316 (2), 318 (3), 488 (15), 498 (3). Content Areas/Minor specialization required: • One 30-hour content area specialization, or two 15-hour content area specializations. • A teaching minor and one 15-hour content area specialization. (See the Secondary Education section for teaching minors.) 30-Hour or 15-Hour Content Specialities: General Science Social Sciences Reading Fine Arts Mathematics Special Education Resource Language Arts/Communications 15-Hour Content Specialities : Art Music Physical Education Foreign Language Multicultural/Bilingual Child Development SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM: SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATION PROGRAM General Requirements: • Specific course requirements of the college (see index). • Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). • Admission and Retention Standards for the School of Education. • The academic teaching major and teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 45 and 24 quarter hours respectively, or a composite major of at least 68 hours. • The teaching major and minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement). • The student preparing to teach in either junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional and academic specialization. Education courses required (to be completed in sequence): Educ 195 (1X300 (2), 350 (5), 363_(3), 462 (4), 364 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3). • Support courses required: Commun 102 (3) or its equivalent Teaching majors and minors in the social sciences must also take Educ 450 (3). Candidates for secondary certification are required to demonstrate computer literacy. Students may elect to take only twelve hours of student teaching by registering for Educ 457. In that case the Modules listed for Educ 495 must be completed at some other time (Preferably prior to student teaching). Permission of the department chair is required for this option. Students seeking secondary teaching certificates are encouraged to include Psych SS 101 and CS PD 101 among the courses selected to meet General Education requirements. TEACHING MAJORS AND MINORS The student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's academic (teaching) major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should also select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the School of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty- nine hours of subjects in closely related fields. The student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's composite teaching major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should also select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the School of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. PROGRAM: ART COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR-BACHELOR DEGREE Students will be admitted to this program upon recommendation of the art faculty following a portfolio review during their sophomore year. General Requirements: Specific Requirements of the college (see index). Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). A minor is not required. Art majors must have a C or better in major courses. Art majors must have an overall GPA of 3.00 or B. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above.) Specific Requirements (83 total credit hours): Foundation (19 credit hours-taken freshmen year): • Art 180 (3), (offered Autumn quarter.) Drawing: Art 111 (4), 112 (4), (offered Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters.) • Design: Art 116 (4), 117 (4), (offered Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters.) • Core (17 credit hours): Art HU201 (3), HU202 (3) HU203 (3), 218 (3) and Photo 101 (5). Art majors who have completed the foundation and core are permitted to take the 300 level studio class without the 200 prerequisite (except ceramics, photography and visual communications). Students who have nol completed the foundation and core and who wish to take specialized studio courses must take the 200 level studio course. • Additional Requirements (24 credit hours): Art 231 (3), 243 (3), 335 or 235 (3), 351 (3), Art 354 or 254 (3), 370 or 270 (3); one of the following: Art 322 or 222 (3), 323 or 223 (3), 324 or 224 (3); one of the following: Art 360 or 260 (3), 365 or 265 (3). (Art 351 must be completed pior to commencing student teaching or similar training.) • An additional 23 credit hours will be determined in consultation with the Department of Visual Arts chair so that an individualized program can be designed to meet the needs of each student and shall be completed after having sought and gained admittance to the program. • The student must have an emphasis in two of the following areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, illustration, jewelry, painting photography, printmaking, sculpture weaving. • Support course required: Commun 102 (3).
