IDAHOANS READY IDAHO FALLS, Idaho, March 24— (Special to The Standard-Examiner)—Idaho Falls hoopsters will en¬gage in a brief workout today as final preparation for their three game series with the Ogden, Utah five at Ogden this week end. The local aggregation trotted through a two hour drill last night. Coach Art Barringer and nine hoop-sters will make the trip to Ogden. Gem State Champs Picked to Win Series Utah Tigers Must Depend Upon Accurate Basket Shooting and Speed By PHIL McLEESE What has been described as one of the biggest and best high school bas¬ketball champions Idaho has pro¬ duced in many; seasons, Idaho Falls, will go into: its three-game se¬ries with Ogden.: Utah titleholder, a slight favorite. The first and: second games of the series will be held in Ogden Friday and Saturday. The third, if neces sary, will be playeo: in Idaho Falls nex': Monday. All pro ceeds will go tc charity. There will be preliminary games between the Weber high school, and Coops' Mar¬ket fives on both Friday and Sat-urday evenings. Idaho Favored The Tigers of Idaho have been es¬tablished as. the favorite to win from the Tigers of Utah for two reasons In the first place the Gem State champions are taller and huskier, and ii the second place they are more ex perienced. But this certainly doesn't mean that there aren't going to be two excep¬tional ball games in Ogden, because when two of the best prep quintets in the western part of the country get together, the fans—and there are ex pected to be plenty there—are going to see something worth while. At the Idaho Tiger school the four- year plan is in vogue, whereas Dick Kapple, Ogden mentor, has his young¬sters for only two years. The fact that the Northerners get two more years of training under the same coach cannot help but make a differ¬ence. Then, too, the Idaho state asso¬ciation uses the 21-year-old limit, while the Utah organization has adopted the 20-year rule. Club Rosters Following are the rosters of the two clubs, with position, age, height, ex¬perience and weight of the players: OGDEN Name and pos. Age. Hgt. Exp. Wt. Jorgensen, C..18 6 1 185 Robert Shaw, f......l7 5-11 1 150 xJud Williams, g 18 6 2 150 Starting Centers The starting centers are Bill Kinner of Ogden and Eldon Watson of Idaho Falls. The latter has an inch advan¬tage in height, 25 pounds in weight and 2 years in age. But both young¬sters are great ball players—they can shoot, play a good defensive game and fit in smoothly into team play. The slender Kinner may have a difficult time playing against his huskier opponent, and then again he may not. Utah fans will remember what Kinner did when Sid Kramer,j huge Granite guard, was watching him in the Utah state meet last week. The Ogden guards, Fowler and Captain Anderson, are not much smaller than the Idaho Falls starting forwards, Reed Naylor and Walter Green. All four are near the six-foot mark. And the competition between the two pair should be something worth going some distance to see. Ogden Small Unless Ogden's small forwards can use their speed to a great deal of ad¬vantage they are going to have a dif-ficult time scoring. Weir and Leh- man Utah Tiger scorers, are ootn five feet seven, and the Idaho ath¬letes who are going to guard them, Hodge and Jud Williams, are both six feet—and husky. According to reports from Idaho Falls, the prep team of that city is extremely versatile. It can shift its offense and defense to any style of play, according to its opponents. It can play the man for man, five-man zone or man for man zone defenses, and it can shift from a deliberate to a fast breaking offense on the spur of the moment. IDAHO QUINT GETS EDGE IN TITLE SERIES IDAHO FALLS, March 24.—(AP) —Holding an advantage in weight, height and experience, the Idaho Falls High school basketball team, champion of Idaho, will go into the first game of a charity series with Ogden High school, Utah champion,1 at Ogden tomorrow night favored to win, by most critics. The second game of the series will be played Saturday night, and the third, if it is necessary, will be contested in Idaho Falls next week. Under the Idaho State Athletic association rules, players may com¬pete for four years, while at Ogden the players may compete only two years. On the Idaho squad, players with two and three years' experience are numerous, while the Ogden squad is composed of seven men with one year of experience and four playing their first year. With the exception of Robert Shaw, a forward, every man on the Idaho Falls team is six feet or over. Bill Kinner, center, and Joe Fowler, guard, are the only six- footers on the Ogden squad. Idaho also has a decided advantage in weight. |
